A Mexican social media influencer was shot dead during a TikTok livestream, authorities said.
Valeria Marquez, 23, who had nearly 200,000 followers on social media, was working at a beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, central Mexico, before the incident on Tuesday.
On her TikTok livestream, Marquez was seen seated at a table holding a stuffed toy in front of her. She was heard saying, "They're coming," before a voice off-screen asked, "Hey, Vale?"
"Yes," Marquez responded before muting the sound on her livestream.
She appeared to be speaking to someone off-camera when she was shot once in the head and once in the chest, killing her instantly.
Marquez had said earlier in the livestream that someone had come to the salon when she was not there with an "expensive gift" for her.
The Jalisco state prosecutor said in a statement that her death is being investigated as femicide - the killing of women or girls for reasons of gender.

First time I ever heard of that.

Being an “influencer” has it’s negative side.
If she weren’t dead, she might just be happy at the number of hits her social media accounts are getting.
Oh well. She’s dead.
RIP
She was not killed because of Tik Tok
She was killed because the world doesn’t need “influencers”
“Gender-based violence is highly common in Mexico. According to the UN, 10 women or girls in the country are murdered every day by partners or family members.”
Democrat politicians: Yes, we need that cultural enrichment here. It will help atone for white privilege.
I figured she was killed because of a jealous ex-boyfriend.
I doubt this was a “random” murder.
Yes, but I’ve advocated only flogging for the crime of being an “influencer;” the death pants is far too much
Jealous ex or obsessed stalker.
She lived in a craphole country...
It’s almost as bad as Chicago.
Another term that has crept into the lexicon in the age of on-line influencers is "parasocial relationship" where people think that they are actually friends "IRL" (in real life) with these influencers, mostly because of social media activity (the influencer may like a comment or tweet a short reply to something the person has left on their social media page).
Plus, these women often post or live-stream from businesses or locations that are easily recognizable and accessible, a particular coffee shop for example. A lot different from traditional celebrities who were more guarded about where they were at any given time and often traveled with security when they were in public.
I'm sure any young, attractive influencer with more than, say 50k followers likely has plenty of stories about weird parasocial stalker dudes.
Influencers are really nothing more than the modern equivalent of rock stars or Hollywood celebrities. And many are just as famous and well-known, even if they don't produce anything that us older people would consider art. Instead, they produce "content."
I read a term the other day I never read before. "Thirst trap".
