Decades before Jeanine Pirro became a co-host of Fox News’s “The Five,” cable’s highest-rated news show, she was a respected prosecutor, county court judge and then district attorney in New York’s Westchester County. This makes her better qualified to serve as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia than Ed Martin, whose nomination President Donald Trump withdrew last week following opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill.
But since Pirro left her last job as a prosecutor two decades ago, she has acted in ways that call into question whether she has the independence necessary to responsibly take on one of the most important prosecutorial jobs in the United States. What’s more, in choosing her, Trump is pushing the limits of his authority. It isn’t clear that the law allows him to name successive interim U.S. attorneys who are not confirmed by the Senate. Both these questions need to be resolved quickly to protect D.C.'s interests.
Martin faced criticism during his four months on the job for describing himself as “Trump’s lawyer.” In fact, a U.S. attorney represents the people. He or she takes an oath to uphold the Constitution, not to protect the president. Maintaining the rule of law sometimes requires, for example, prosecuting the president’s friends or supporters.
The U.S. attorney for the capital, in particular, has a big and important job. The person supervises more than 350 prosecutors who handle all local and federal crimes in the city. (The D.C. attorney general, elected by city voters, prosecutes only juvenile crimes and certain adult misdemeanors.)
Trump has long wanted to place Pirro in a high government position. Eight years ago, he interviewed her for a top job at the Justice Department, but then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions...

an independent U.S. attorney = someone who will do Chuck Schumer’s bidding and make every effort to get Trump
Graves was a White House puppet.
It’s sad that the Washington Post went from a paper of record to a complete partisan joke.
Of what would this “independent” US attorney be independent?
Or, to put it another way, what branch of the US government would this attorney belong to? And how is the power of that branch expressed?
This “independent” justice department theory was already used to remove a President. I suppose that was better than a Mannlicher-Carcano rifle, but not a lot.
It’s not going to work this time.
In other words the unelected TDS infused illegal immigrant child trafficking for their own perversions deepstate wants their own DC attorney. Well talk about wishing in one hand and shitting in the other, here we have the COMPOST at it again.
The CIA must be nervous if it is having its office paper publish this screed.
It fears the prosecution.
I think venue for suits against Washington gubmint officials should be held in a random federal venue that changes every year.
A jury in rural Tennessee needs to be the place, then Texas, etc.
1970 or before?
Paywall…
Who is Graves?
I guess the Compost thought Graves was hunky dory.
“Under Graves, the US Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute 67% of those arrested for crimes in DC in 2022, including 72% of misdemeanor arrests and 53% of felony arrests.”
No doubt prosecuted 100% + of people at Capitol January 6, or within a mile and a half. Did WaPo report that stat?
Why Pres Trump even invited the POS owner of the ComPost to his Inauguration is completely escaping me, at this point.
If it says Washington Post, I do...
previous federal prosecutor under Biden
The WaPo speaks of independence?
The butt-boy and “mama” of the capital of slime and pedophilia?
The most inept and lying collection of pseudo-journalists in the multiverse?
Bwahahahaha.
Judge Jeanine would eat your lunch any time of the day/night/week/year/century.
She is sooooo superior in intelligence and morals to any of your laughable staff that it would take scientific notation to adequately express the difference.
When Carl “Red Diaper Baby” Bernstein found out that everything Republican was wurst than Watergate.
101%
I wonder what would have happened if they’d investigated JFK assassination as aggressively as third rate break in.
Do not all US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the current president? He can hire and fire at his whim, and it is customary for incoming admins to clean house of all the US Attorneys from the previous admin. So.... why do we need this now?!
Because "Orange Man Bad," Silly.
