Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Maybe he’s playing chicken with BP. If he instructs Medicare to only pay X for a drug, but the drug company wants Y, who will blink first? Will BP stop making or selling the drugs for the price of X? I doubt it.

And if Medicare is paying X instead of Y, you can bet the PBMs will demand the same.

. . . incessant drug ads. They aren't primarily trying to get you to buy a drug. They are bribing TV networks to refrain from presenting negative news and opinions about them.

I would like to see the end of the incessant drug ads. They aren't primarily trying to get you to buy a drug. They are bribing TV networks to not look too closely at prices and side effects

America's REAL drug problem!

Not the same thing.

If a drug costs a dollar per pill in Europe, why do we pay five dollars per pill for the same drug from the same factory?

Canada pays way lower prices for the same drugs that we pay a premium for.

The pharma bros have been screwing us for decades....................

I don’t think he’s instituting price controls. I think he’s negotiating. He is saying if France pays X we also pay X. Why should we pay Y? They can send a bill for Y, but Medicare will only cut a check for X. That’s not price control. It’s brinkmanship perhaps. I think he fully expects BP to raise the prices around the world to make up for the cuts in income from the US. It’s still a free market it’s just not a free lunch.

So from the sound of it, he wants meds to be made in America AND for them to be cheap? So either companies will make significantly less profit and/or their employees will make significantly less in wages/salaries.

A lot of pharmaceutical companies have foundations that you can get their drugs for nothing. I have an auto immune syndrome and require an injection called Actemra ACTPEN and I get it free through the company’s foundation otherwise I would have to pay $2000 an injection every 10 days.

Most of the drugs Americans rely on are made—at least in part—overseas. China and India dominate the supply chain, especially for ingredients and generics.

So while Big Pharma charges Americans the highest prices in the world, much of the production isn’t even domestic.

Trump’s push to tie U.S. drug prices to the lowest global prices isn’t anti-market—it’s a correction to a rigged system where Americans have been subsidizing the world.

It's a complete and total win all the way around.

Big Pharma sits on insane amounts of capital, comparable to BigUniv endowments; in fact, Lilly for decades called their Scrooge McDuck treasure chest the "Endowment", and that's not a complaint, Lilly has done a lot of good.

You're not getting Wegovy through Canada at Canada pricing (although the GLP-1 crew is getting hit hard through legit compounding in the US).

Providing C and D relief is exactly how you want to be positioned into the mid-terms.

Trump is simply setting the prices that the federal government will be willing to pay. There’s no legal obligation for the federal government to pay whatever price pharma companies ask. Can big pharma refuse to sell at these lower prices? I suppose so. But then again, why would they do that to what is probably their biggest single customer?

This EO puts the ball in big pharma’s court. If big pharma is not willing to adjust their pricing in order to give American buyers parity with international customers, it will not end well for them.

He is right that Americans are paying all of the R&D cost which is not fair.

Big Pharma pays 20x more money in "marketing" costs than they do in research. Most of that "marketing" is political campaign contributions and bribes to physicians or the healthcare executives who employ the physicians.

The research done by pharmaceutical companies is increasingly of poorer quality with unreproducible results. It is occasionally done in third-world countries where safety is of lesser concern.

The COVID-19 and mRNA fiasco has poisoned any trust we should have in pharmaceutical companies. No longer will they get the benefit of the doubt.

💯 agree. They can still provide information to consumers via web sites etc. If you search for a disease you will get the desired results (well, somewhat anyway ). If you follow the rabbit hole and if the data is not censored like we saw during Covid, then people will find answers if they look for them. I do worry about sites shadow delisting search results but that’s a different topic.

I wonder if anyone ever did a study on the psychosomatic effects of drug advertising. Does it drive more sales, or send people needlessly to doctors?

“if you go to Canada you can get these drugs much cheaper..its about time we pay the same as everyone else worldwide”

I like the “Most Favored Nation” approach where we will pay the amount the lowest-paying nation pays!

>>”If a Democrat announced that businesses were required to lower their prices, conservatives would be screaming “Communism!”

Trump’s not demanding anything. He’s simply announcing the maximum price the federal government will be willing to pay. The rest will fall into place.

So which federal district or other court will block this?
