So much for the Monday deadline on unconditional ceasefire with sanctions to follow.

Lavrov orchestrated this with Erdogan during the parade. It’s pretty much genius.

This is off topic but interesting history.

“The giant table and the signing of the peace agreement in Paris on 27 January, 1973. “Roundtables” for peace talks?

“One of the most “graphic and politically important instances of deliberately manipulating the shape and symbolism” of a piece of furniture for a ‘round table’ occurred in Paris in the late 60s during the peace talks between the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the National Liberation Front (NLF).

The parties involved could not agree about the organization of the conference, and, in particular, the shape of the conference table. The North Vietnamese and the NLF preferred a square table to stress equality between the parties while the US and South Vietnam proposed a rectangular table that did not provide an equal amount of space for all of the parties.
After numerous iterations of proposals and rejections, the Soviet ambassador in Paris proposed a giant, round table with two smaller rectangular tables located at two opposite sides of the round table. After ten weeks of deadlock in the negotiations due to the table’s shape, everyone agreed. Herdeg comments that the negotiating parties never disagreed about the meaning of the proposed shapes of tables and “… both recognized and cherished the political symbolism implied in form.”

Zelinski will either not show up or he will walk out on the Russians. Maybe Trump is going to make sure Zelinksi’s last act is to go to Istanbul, never again to disrupt negotiations over the conflict again.

The title makes it sound like President Trump begged Zelensky to meet with Putin, and I highly doubt that that is what actually happened.

Well, it’s The Beeb. It’s clear, even from their article, that the reality is: Putin offered, Zelensky balked, Trump ordered Zelensky to go, Zelensky’z then said WILCO.

We’ll see how it goes...
