Vance called Indian prime minister to encourage ceasefire talks after receiving alarming intelligence, sources say

A core group of top US officials — including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State and interim national security adviser Marco Rubio, and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles — had been closely monitoring the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan when on Friday morning, the US received alarming intelligence, Trump administration officials told CNN. While they declined to describe the nature of the information, citing its sensitivity, they said it was critical in persuading the three officials that the US should increase its involvement.

Vance himself would call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The vice president briefed President Donald Trump on the plan, then spoke with Modi at noon ET on Friday, making clear to the Indian prime minister that the White House believed there was a high probability for dramatic escalation as the conflict went into the weekend, the administration officials said. Vance encouraged Modi to have his country communicate with Pakistan directly and to consider options for de-escalation, the officials said. The behind-the-scenes details of the US involvement have not previously been reported.

At that point, the officials said, the US believed the nuclear-armed neighbors were not talking, and it needed to get them back to the bargaining table. Vance also outlined to Modi a potential off-ramp that the US understood the Pakistanis would be amenable to, the officials said, though they did not offer details.

Following the call, State Department officials, including Rubio, began working the phones with their counterparts in India and Pakistan through the night, the sources said.

Rubio had been calling people in the region beginning Tuesday with a general idea of how to reach a ceasefire, but the administration left the finer details of the agreement for India and Pakistan to work out directly.

I would bet that the intelligence being discussed involved one side or the other possibly using nuclear weapons. And if I had to bet on which side, it would be the Pakistanis initiating their use.l, because India seems to be far better at waging war.

The problem with even a “small” nuclear war occurring halfway around the world is not that it would directly affect us, as it wouldn’t. What would affect us, however, is the fact that if several dozen cities ended up getting nuked, the amount of soot and other particles that would be thrown up into the atmosphere would cool the Earth by several degrees, and also block a significant amount of sunlight. That is a recipe for a worldwide famine, and thus the effective destruction of civilization. Just imagine how people would act if they couldn’t get food at their local grocery store - which doesn’t require a whole lot of imagination, as we went through something very minor and temporary like that at the beginning of Covid. People went batshit crazy, and it’s not like they couldn’t get food, they just couldn’t get which particular foods they wanted to obtain, that and toilet paper. Imagine no food, at all, especially for people who have no stock of foods at home - in a nation with half a billion firearms.

Can you imagine a world where I couldn't get my Big Mac, fries and a chocolate shake? I wouldn't want to live in a world like that.

Add to that the fact that once someone breaks the nuclear barrier, others that did not want to be the first might feel less constrained.

Now where did I put those KI pills?

“I would bet that the intelligence being discussed involved one side or the other possibly using nuclear weapons. “

That’s my take, too.

Your scenario is right out of “One Second After.” Things can get real ugly real quickly when basics like food, clean water, fuel, and electricity are no long available.

Incredibly cute children. Honest question: Is that their normal dress style? I’m merely curious.

And to make it worse, command-and-control in the Pakistani military is less than the best. So rogue behavior is possible.

And to make it even worse, the Pakistanis all belong to a cult where you are directed to kill infidels. And your reward is 72 virgins in the next life.

On the plus side, it’s Trump and not Harris who is our president. Who knows what the childlike and usually drunk Harris might do here?

Yeah that is my guess too..Both India and Pakistan have nukes so either country could have used them, my guess would be Pakistan, so I would understand the concern..Rubio has really surprised me, honestly one of Trump’s BEST PICKS..at the beginning I know many were against it but he’s been a breath of fresh air, cant believe many yrs ago we were calling him Lil Marco LOL

Can anyone post a link to a good factual summary of exactly what happened in this latest incident involving these two powers. Ideally just the facts, and not spin on behalf of one or the other of them.

Also, I have been hearing claims that India took out a good portion of Pakistan’s nuclear capability in its strike, which was buried underground. Do we know if this is true?

A reporter today on CNN said this is not over. India has cutoff Pakistan from three rivers that supply water to it from the Himalayas.

Name calling in political campaigns is just about as common as throwing punches in heavyweight championship fights. It doesn’t have anything to do with whether the participants like each other or not. Everything to do with winning. The only thing to do afterwards is shake hands and make up and go forward from there.

Good post.

Pakistan is a ridiculously complex country—with both tribal loyalties and elements of Muslim fanaticism which are more important than national considerations.

The British created a monstrosity.

The monstrosity was there before the Brits arrived.
