Summary

May 9 (Reuters) - As Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Mass as pontiff at the Sistine Chapel on Friday, he spoke a few words in English. It was a reminder - if anyone needed one - that a baseball fan who hails from Chicago was now leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

For American Catholics, the elevation of Robert Prevost to the papacy was a shock, a cause for celebration and a chance for some fun. After the announcement, social media lit up with memes about Leo eating hotdogs, bringing deep dish pizza to the Vatican and switching out the Popemobile for a pickup truck.

But despite the warm embrace of his countrymen and women, the deeply divided U.S. Catholic Church may ultimately pose some of the most serious challenges for the new pope.

Those divisions, which mirror more generalized political polarization in the U.S., are evident in a host of issues: immigration, same-sex couples, climate change and the role of women in the Church, among other issues.

The split has grown wider in recent years as a growing segment of conservative Catholics becomes increasingly vocal and assertive. Pope Francis - who was seen as more progressive-minded thanks to his views on climate change and migration - saw his popularity decline in the U.S. over time as the conservative influence helped shape opinions: In 2024, about 75% of U.S. Catholics viewed Francis favorably, down from about 90% in 2015, according to a Pew Research Poll.

Someone discussing the new Pope listed some decisions such as what to wear as he came out on the balcony and so on, along with various matters at the Vatican.

“His is one of the few positions in the world where he is the sole boss of the decisions. What he wants is the final word for the Cardinals and everyone else.”

Which side of The Really Great Schism is he on: Cubs or White Sox?

Those are some BS numbers. He was as popular as a split lip.

Once the Pope goes against abortion, our judicial system will denounce him and some in Congress will surround the Vatican with pitch forks demanding that the Vatican hand over Mr Prevost

Yep. And this non-Catholic refuses to put our country in debt to buy the votes of 90% Catholic illegal immigrants for the DemonRat Party. It’s very clear what is happening with Catholic NGOs on the government teat. I’m so glad this is cut off now. Thank you DOGE. It’s not you my Catholic friends. America first, and we’re 80% NOT of your faith. See also how France, Spain and Mexico USED to have a different church-state relationship. Not here baby.

It probably wouldn’t be politic for him to declare.

Babylon means ‘mass’ confusion.... I have no idea WHO told you that America is NOT mentioned in the Bible ... Babylon is the state of mind.

The pope is a fan of the White Sox. He was at one of the World Series games in Chicago in 2005 when the White Sox played the Astros, who were still in the NL at that time.

His brother was interviewed and said Leo is a Sox fan. Their mother liked the Cubs and their father the Cardinals. I saw a photo of the future pope at the 2005 World Series.

As one hopeful Sox fan commented: “Well, we need all the help we can get.”

NOOOOO... We are told to 'watch' Jerusalem ... there is where the 'whore' of Babylon will set up shop... Sadly the key of David is not been part of Christian study .... only some claim Peter's keys... but they lie and ignore what Peter penned...

Times of the Gentiles being fulfilled, and there is nothing akin to the key of David in this poke in the eye of this DEI selection ... We are warned..... Christ declared ... Mark 13:23 before any of the so called New Testament was placed on plant fibers or animal skins or chiseled into stone ... JACOB's trouble!!!!
