A New York town official has been arrested for allegedly shooting a DoorDash driver who was lost and trying to get directions, police said.
The 24-year-old victim was attempting to deliver food to a house Friday night when he got lost in Chester, a town about 50 miles north of Manhattan, the New York State Police said.
He "approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at the residence of John Reilly III," who is the Town of Chester highway superintendent, police said.
Reilly, 48, told the victim "to get off his property," and then Reilly allegedly fired multiple shots at the driver while he was trying to leave in his car, police said.
The driver was shot once in the back and hospitalized with serious injuries, police said. He's currently in stable condition, police said on Tuesday.

This is one half of the story
What the hell is wrong with people.
Clearly the person was leaving and no imminent threat, and you shot at them anyway?
People like this, make all gun owners look bad...
I have ZERO problem with defending yourself or property, and I can understand even thinking some criminal is disguising themselves as a delivery driver to gain access... but the person is clearly leaving, you still decide to shoot at them?
Insane.
The cops I am sure have already confirmed the driver was on a delivery. One phone call to door dash would have done this... so hardly is it likely the driver was lying about this... The cops would have never told the press this if they had discovered otherwise.
This gun owner is just another nut that makes all gun owners look bad.
People love killing and are often waiting for an opportunity /shrug /weareallsinners
a doordash driver that doesnt have gps?
Get the hell off my property!
Bang Bang
Nobody turns their back to me.
This story sounds fishy to me. BLM criminals are everywhere, which makes people afraid and endangers Doordash drivers.
GPS is messed up out here.
It will put you in endless loops, take you to the wrong location, or tell you to perform impossible motions like drive down non-existent roads.
Chester is Eastward of me.
I think the fact he got shot in the back is what will put the property owner in prison. If he shot him in the front of the body, he could claim he was advancing on him or something. I don’t think there is any way you can legally justify shooting someone in the back, even on your own property. Maybe he could claim he saw him reaching for a weapon, but there would need to be evidence of that (eg video). Someone correct me if I’m wrong because I’m definitely not a legal expert.
“a doordash driver that doesnt have gps?”
I don’t know. People are buying this here.
Not I.
Some entire subdivisions are missing from the map systems. GPS won't get you to an address in those subdivisions.
Then there are map areas with abandoned mining trails and cow paths marked as roads.
Sometimes you have to ask for directions.
I want to see a picture of The 24-year-old victim.
So far people haven’t heard a reason for the guy to start killing the deliveryman.
“a doordash driver that doesnt have gps?”
I have read somewhere that his phone was dead and after being shot had to go somewhere to charge it to 1% to call an ambulance.
There is a reason. Whether it’s because the delivery man was a criminal of some sort acting criminally or the homeowner was some kind of criminal acting criminally.
One or both is my guess.
Nothing in this network news account told in such a way as to lead people to assume
Agreed. It’s insane.
1. He's trying to kill the guy while he's _leaving_???
2. He's a terrible shot.
If the story is essentially accurate (I know: bad assumption), then throw the book at the shooter.
In most States, you can catch a burglar in the act, and if he is smart enough to drop the swag and walk away, you will not be justified in shooting him.
I cannot see how the homeowner could have been justified to shoot the doordash driver when he was leaving. There was no reasonable basis for the homeowner to fear that his life was in danger.
