Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told business leaders Monday the private sector needs to be part of the solution to increase funding for local roads.
Whitmer made the pitch at the annual Governor’s Luncheon staged by the Macomb County Chamber, held this year at The Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township, attended by about 430 people, including a plethora of Macomb County politicians and business leaders.
While Whitmer noted the celebratory mood in the county over securing a new fighter-jet mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base last week, she brought up a renewed focus in the state to increase funding for local roads now that most of the $3.5 billion Rebuilding Michigan Plan for state highways and bridges has been completed.
“As we celebrate the big win of last week, the lesson that’s sticking with me is one that everyone in this room knows very well in Macomb County: The best way to get things done is by doing them together,” she said. “From local government officials to business leaders, the willingness to work across the aisle and across sectors has played a key role in making Macomb County an economic powerhouse.”......
“We can’t afford to risk losing all of the progress we have made here in Macomb. If we compromise, I’m confident we can deliver a strong roads deal and keep winning key manufacturing investments.
A road plan will have to include spending cuts along with “new, fairer sources of revenue,” she said.
“We’ve got to be able to do both,” she added.
In comments after her talk, she said she hopes a new road-funding plan will be passed this year as part of the 2026 budget, hopefully by the end of June.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
However, Michigan Roads really suck. In Macomb county the road between Selfridge and New Baltimore is a bumpy mess.
Yes, and WELFARE RECIPIENTS must help build roads.
Regards,
Hmm. What happened to all those taxes?
And I thought also we were told years ago the state lotteries were to help with things like this? Those lotteries have made quite a lot of money.
Where did all THAT go?
ANYTHING that can be done to cut Wretched Whiner’s political throat would be a service to all mankind. That woman is pure evil.
“...how much gas taxes have been diverted to social programs...”
-
State gas taxes, intended to maintain and expand roadways,
are diverted to a lot of things, including
-creating bike lanes
-public transit
-and other things
that are all intended to reduce traffic
which would also reduce the collection of gas taxes...
All LEFTISTS are pure evil.
She’s a witch!! (hehehe)
They call it “The North Carolina Education Lottery” here. And the public fell for it. Lock, stock and twin political cash funnels. 1 to each pocket.
I find it totally disgusting that people who don’t have children at all are sent tax bills that contain a tax for public schools and demand that it be paid.
And if you show up to a school committee council meeting and start asking questions then they tell you that you have no say because you don’t have children in their corrupt goobermint skrewl system...
The $}{!Tmer bitch is simply trying to fleece funds mafia style. Except that the Mafia is not as CORRUPT AS she is.
I will pose this question to everyone here. What happens to that 1/10th of a cent from the $$$.$$ and 9/10th from the sale price of a gallon of fuel ?
We don’t have a 1/10th cent coin. SOMEONE IS GETTING IT !?!?
And they TAX 35-40 cents per gallon of fuel to pay for roads...
Here in Washington State electric vehicles are very popular. They now are thinking of (maybe it passed) putting a new tax on them due to the loss of gas tax revenues.
With regard to private companies footing some of the bill - Microsoft paid for a lot of a road improvement and interchange to service their campus which was increasing in size. They also paid a bunch for the light rail station near the campus.
On the other hand, a nearby house made a minor addition. They had to connect to the sewer, but at least the main sewer line was nearby. They did have to put in a new fire hydrant on the main road near the house. I have no idea how the city figured that - it had been just fine for the last 70 years without one.
A friend of mine wanted to develop a property and put on 6 homes. But the city was going to make him hook up to sewer. The trouble was - they were going to make him pay for a main line down the developed city road (houses all along it on septic) that would have gone a half-mile to the existing main.
I see that the nearby house did have to put in a new fire hydrant on the main road near the house. I have no idea how the city figured that
Theft and corruption doesn’t just grow on trees.
It costs money!
No doubt that shortfall exists because taxpayers’ money goes to support the lifestyles of parasitic government “workers,” useless scumbags on the dole, including illegal immigrants, and is used to fund whatever crazy, pet DEI projects the overwhelming majority of voters don’t want.
Gas taxes in Illinois and surrounding counties around me isn’t going to the roads. Maybe because we live in Red counties.
The Mr. Hyde face of Gov. Whitmer peeks out from behind the folder.
Excuse me, what are taxes for then?
