Katheryn Speck said she used to be a Canadian nationalist, travelled the world with a maple leaf on her backpack and once lived in Quebec so she could become fluently bilingual.
But on Saturday she was among hundreds of people who rallied at the Alberta Legislature to support separation from Canada, with many in the crowd waving Alberta flags and a few even displaying the U.S. Stars and Stripes.
"I thought it was a beautiful, fantastic country. But now I'm so disappointed. I'm literally crushed that we'll never be represented in this country and there's never a chance of changing the government," Speck said.
Earlier this week, Premier Danielle Smith's government proposed legislation that would lower the bar for holding a referendum.
While Smith told reporters she won't presuppose what questions Albertans might bring to a ballot, the move would make it easier for citizens to call for a vote to secede from Canada.
The federal Liberals' election win Monday has also prompted some people in the province to demand an exit.

Get in line; Greenland’s first.
When we start importing Mexican states we can tell them, “Leave the cartels; take the food.”
I can see a new country being formed by Alberta, Saskatchewan, BC and Manitoba. And since all access to the territories is through these provinces, they too will joining the new country.
THAT would be great!
BC is wacked out leftists.
1. The Albertans are going to have to come up with a concrete plan of addressing claims of “First Nations” and Metis.
2. The polling in favor of secession is only at 25%. A formal movement is needed to push that up into 2/3rd’s territory.
Pretty high.
Carney is going to run Canada into the ground by the end of his term.
It'll get up to 50% in a couple of years.
I prefer the conservative Canadians. Greenlanders are mostly tree hugging commies.
Vancouver certainly is. The rest of BC isn’t but unfortunately, Vancouver dominates the province.
This!
But Greenland as
A territory would work!
Yes, and Vancouver should be mentioned along with Seattle. Portland, SF and LA in terms of drugs, homelessness and cultural rot.
Their one tree is pretty special to them.
We can keep the treaties as is. I think if they can be made to understand the federal government is going to screw them over, it might not be a problem getting their support.
Ha!
“some people in the province to demand an exit”
It reminds me of Brexit, also a song:

That’s why Greenland needs to be a territory and not a state.
And Victoria, the capitol, is a liberal hot spot.
That's primarily in the Vancouver and Victoria area. The rest of BC pretty much voted conservative last month. Besides, there is no way BC could remain in what's left of Canada with so much distance between themselves and the eastern provinces.
Why haven’t we heard from Saskatchewan?
