After 100 Years, Britain’s Two-Party Political System May Be Crumbling
New York times ^ | May the 4th, 2025 | Stephen Castle

By making extensive gains in a set of local elections held on Thursday in England, Nigel Farage, one of Britain’s best known supporters of President Trump and the leader of the anti-immigration Reform U.K. party, consolidated his reputation as the country’s foremost political disrupter.

But he may have done something bigger still: blown a hole in the country’s two-party political system.

For nearly all of the past century, power in Britain has alternated between the governing Labour Party, now led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and the opposition Conservatives, who last year selected a new leader, Kemi Badenoch.

...Still reeling after being ejected from power last year, the Conservatives suffered another disastrous set of results. With the economy flatlining, Labour was punished by voters angry with government spending curbs and higher taxes introduced since it came to power.

The electorate rejected both main parties, Professor Ford said, adding that, were a result like this to occur in a general election, “the Conservative Party would cease to exist as a meaningful force in Parliament.”

When Keir the Marxist and Kami the anti-colonial Socialist are the two party leaders, the system is bound to collapse.

The West of England is an area of South West England around the River Avon. The area has a local government combined authority that consists of the unitary authorities of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset.

Hopefully, Reform will replace both Labor and the Conservatives, both parties having completely lost their way.

“...Labour was punished by voters angry with government spending curbs and higher taxes...”

Voters are not angry with foreigners overrunning the place. That’s not a factor at all.

Hopefully, Reform will replace both Labor and the Conservatives, both parties having completely lost their way.

If they allow that to happen, it would mean that they have bribed Nigel Farage. So if he ends up becoming PM, ultimately he'll do nothing.

They need a 2 stage voting system:

Round 1 if you win 51% then you get the seat.

Otherwise top two candidates go to round 2

Round 2 if you win 51% then you get the seat.

People are tired of elections with the appearance of choice.

Britain is crumbling, period, far far far too much enemy infiltration/immigration/whatever...Allowing that there are some good decent people in Moslem lands, those places also have millions of dangerous Islamicists, blood-thirsty terrorists, FAR FAR too dangerous to allow into a peaceful western society.

Good for them. 2 party systems are the bane of the people. Nothing can change when you’re just cycling power between 2 parties that don’t stand for anything. Kill 1. Kill both. Shake the etch-a-sketch.

The UK only has 2 Parties, stateist and stateist light. Though pro- Nationalist, Reform UK is still very statist.

The two-party system described has never dominated British local government politics as it has national. Time and time again predictions that new party upheavals in the former will translate to similar upheavals in the latter have come to nothing. Whether that will happen in this case I couldn’t possibly say.

There is a Gilbert and Sullivan song that has the two options as Liberal and Conservative.
