Maher: Raising Taxes on Rich Never Happens, I’m Not Going to Voluntarily Pay More
Breitbart ^ | 05/03/2025 | Ian hatchett

Posted on 05/03/2025 9:17:07 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher criticized and mocked Republicans and stated that they lied about raising taxes on the wealthy and said that raising taxes on the rich “never really happens” and responded to the argument that he could just voluntarily pay more in taxes himself if he wants to and no one will stop him from doing that by saying, “that’s not going to happen.”

While discussing the budget proposal from the Trump administration from earlier in the day, Maher said that the administration is increasing the budget for the Defense Department in their proposed spending bill after vowing to find vast amounts of cost savings inside of the Pentagon and cutting everything else except for border security, Maher stated, “So, they just lie. Every time, they lie. Also, I heard last week, the Republicans are actually thinking about raising taxes on the rich, hahaha, that never really happens, does it? That never really happens.”

The rich pay most of the taxes.
The poor pay very little or no taxes at all.

“The rich pay most of the taxes.”

And the less they pay the more they vote Democrat. Does anyone else notice a connection?

What really happens:

In dollar terms, the rich pay most of the income taxes, and the poor pay none.

As percentage of personal income, the rich pay about the same percentage regardless of the marginal rate. If the rate goes up, the rich reconfigure their assets to make more of them not subject to taxes; if the rate goes down, the rich reconfigure their assets to make more of them produce greater growth. Growth is better for the middle and lower classes in dollar terms, but high marginal tax rates are “better” for the middle and lower classes in resentment-easing terms.

In short, no government can legislate human behavior: it can only allow it to be free, or force it to go underground.

With tariffs Trump suggests those making less than $200k will pay none. Bad idea. Everyone needs skin in the game.

How do you make a contribution to reduce the debt?

There are two ways for you to make a contribution to reduce the debt:

At Pay.gov, you can contribute online by credit card, debit card, PayPal, checking account, or savings account.
You can write a check payable to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and, in the memo section, notate that it’s a gift to reduce the debt held by the public. Mail your check to:

Attn Dept G
Bureau of the Fiscal Service
P. O. Box 2188
Parkersburg, WV 26106-2188

It wouldn’t be a perfect world, but I’d love to see the tax code gutted, exemptions stripped, and a flat tax not to exceed 10% in its place. Too bad our elected “leaders” feel the need to keep class warfare, perpetual spending, and the status quo.

I agree...but the screamjng from the commies over a family of 4 with $55K income would commence...or seniors...altho I think seniors earning less than $100K should not pay taxes.

“The rich pay most of the taxes.”

Generally yes, but I wonder if that includes ultra wealthy limousine liberals with their tax free foundations.

True regarding Federal Income taxes— Bill should set up a Foundation like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, and the King of all NGO/501c3’s, JD Rockefeller. They figure if they have to shell out to the Great Unwashed, they can pick and choose where it goes and under their control... and then turn it over to JDRs baby, USAID, that is until the 2025 DOGE Reset.

There are many cowardly republicans and even cowardly democrats. The rich occur on all sides of the political spectrum.

It is the rich that pay most of the taxes. But it’s also the rich which have created the most successful and robust economy in the history of the world. Can anybody point to any country that was successful via the middle-class or just the ‘working class’. The middle-class and working-class and the poor, all depend on the investments made by the rich and well-off.

FACT is that without the rich putting their money back into the economy, the U.S. would just be another third-world country. The rich/investment class make the economy hum. Even if they just keep their money in the bank or invest their money in stocks, it’s all being put to use to build up higher the economy.

To democrats, the rich/investment class, are good targets to keep their ignorant voters on the attack and voting for democrats. Democrats will never admit that the rich and investment class is what’s keeping the U.S. as the strongest in the world. Demonizing the rich works for the democrats, but it doesn’t help the country. Most democrats, middle-class and lower-class, should be grateful that the rich are keeping them housed and eating and working and watching Netflix.

It would be nice if everyone could be guaranteed a minimum salary provided they can Prove they put in a 2000 hour work year. A flat/fair/consumption tax would allow the tax collector to disperse the income amongst the lowest earners.

Every November 1st congress could vote on what the tax should be for the following year. This will happen before most election days. Eventually the public will figure out the optimum tax rate for growth.

I say 2000 hours to keep everyone too tired to cause trouble with others. Might need more depending on age. The more you make the less the subsidy but the 2000 hours of work will be what counts. Money’s the only exchange-no government programs.
