Feb. 28 was one of the darkest days for Ukraine since Russia’s invasion three years earlier. An Oval Office visit by President Volodymyr Zelensky meant to win favor with President Trump turned into a televised shouting match, prompting Mr. Trump to banish his guest from the White House without even serving him a planned lunch.
Mr. Trump was already a deep skeptic of U.S. support for Ukraine. But after the disastrous meeting with Mr. Zelensky, he accelerated his diplomacy with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, drafting a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine that offered major concessions to Moscow. Ukraine’s supporters were in panic.
But there is new hope in Kyiv.
A day after the Trump administration announced an economic deal with Ukraine that gives the United States a stake in its future mineral revenues, analysts say the country’s prospects look brighter than they have in months.

lol....Trump just wants this war to end. He despises this little p*** pot. Trump is easy to read on this one.
Good times...
More on the Ukraine rare earth deal......
The story goes that many of Ukraine’s mineral deposits are located in the “Ukrainian Shield,” a geological region spanning from Luhansk to Kharkiv. Specific regions like Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad are known for their mineral resources.
The most touted legends are:
<><>”significant” reserves of various critical minerals
<><>lithium, titanium, uranium, rare earth elements, and graphite,
<><>along with other valuable metals and non-metallic minerals.
<><>resources vital for various industries, including electronics, energy, and defense.
<><>”substantial” lithium deposits, particularly in the Donetsk region, crucial for battery production.
<><>a “significant” share of the world’s titanium reserves, for aerospace, construction, etc
<><>”significant” uranium reserves, essential for nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons.
<><>”substantial” reserves of rare earth elements, vital for a wide range of high-tech applications.
<><>major graphite producer, in central and n/w regions, used in steel production, batteries, etc
<><>”significant” reserves: iron ore, manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, lead, zinc, silver, other minerals.
Ukraine’s mineral resources are considered “critical” for global supply chains and are “essential” for various industries. The country’s mineral wealth has attracted significant attention and investment, with deals being made to access and exploit these resources.
I’m so tired of that guy and Ukraine.
Sigh, the New York Times (see Tagline). Zelenskyy was never “banished” from the White House. Trump told him to return when he wants peace.
He pressured Z.
He needs to pressure Vlad the Invader.
Time for peace, it’s best for all.
Decades back, the idiot Geithner was giving congressional testimony about something, and complained and complained. When asked directly what HIS counter-proposal was, he stated (paraphrased), "We're only saying we don't like your plan. We haven't proposed anything."
The world is become a mess of "I don't like your proposal, but I don't know how to solve the problem."
One can engage. One cam disengage.
Modeling based on my era, drafted by LBJ, Vietnam brings "engage, escalate, then disengage." Ditto with Afghanistan of late. Same pattern is playing itself out.
Marc Lacey and Carolyn Ryan and Joseph Kahn ARE Hitler and anyone who writes for the paper is a fascist...
Zelensky will break every promise and that will render the minerals deal worthless.
America needs to make a minerals deal with Russia.
But, if we end giving more arms to Ukraine under Trump to continue it, it becomes his war and his debacle.
The minerals deal should only go into effect if Ukraine agrees to end the war.
The "minerals deal" is a face-saving measure for the United States. Nothing substantial will come of it or needs to come of it. Russia will get everything they originally wanted from the Ukraine war because of their use of superior military force. Plus, they will get a bit more than their original territorial objectives.
Yes, the Russians paid too much for what they won. But they won. The rest is now only details of the settlement negotiations.
The lessons of war are ugly and unforgiving. We must pick our fights more carefully. And we must adapt to new weapons, tactics, and strategies as we pick those fights.
"Only the dead have seen the end of war". (George Santayana)
But, certainly shouldn't be wasting anymore money on military aid to Ukraine to continue this war. It's not only a waste of taxpayer money but also is only resulting in Ukraine losing more territory and lives.
