The U.S. and Ukrainian governments touted the signing of a controversial minerals sharing deal as a launchpad for expansive bilateral economic cooperation -- and as a signal of America's long-term investment in a free Ukraine.
The full details of the agreement are yet to be released, with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expected to present the deal to the Ukrainian parliament -- the Rada -- on Thursday.
The deal will also need to be ratified by the Ukrainian parliament, members of which suggested on Thursday it was too early to fully evaluate the agreement.
"I don't know what we have signed," Oleksandr Merezhko, a lawmaker representing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's party and the chair of the parliament's foreign affairs committee, told ABC News.
"Judging by the statement of the prime minister, it is better than the initial version," he added. "It seems like we have managed to dodge Trump's idea to turn the previously-provided U.S. military and material aid into Ukrainian debts."
"It seems like Trump put pressure on us in an attempt to get a victory in his first 100 days in office," Merezhko said. "The devil is in the details.

Searching for truth through piles of spin. This situation is as clear as mud. Thank you for posting this article. I take it as a warning that nothing about the Ukrainian deal is certain.
The Trump Administration just notified Congress (29 April) under the requirements of the Arms Export Control Act, of its intent to sell weapons to Ukraine, for the first time since Inauguration Day.
All the spin cycle words that are installed to establish the narrative, their, the left’s narrative, on how nothing that this President is doing is good.
Words such as ‘controversial’ and ‘touted’ are and do editorialize the story and bias it.
But those of us with half a brain know to Paul Harvey this crap if unfortunate enough to be exposed to it.
Some unconfirmed reports say for the first 10 years all proceeds go to Ukrainian reconstruction
This agreement is no different from Blackrock trying to position itself as a reconstruction bank after the conflict to rebuild.... I call BS on this finance document.
No one has ever heard of the woman from the “INVESTMENT FUND” who will submit it to the Ukrainian Rada or Gov to approve.
ABC can take a long walk of a short pier.
One more comment.
Trump gas now made this HIS WAR.
He has totally boxed himself in on Ukraine.
Look for a battlefield resolution now.
its intent to sell weapons to Ukraine, for the first time since Inauguration Day.

Operative word “sell”, not give.
The problem always was, Trump was appearing to retrospectively argue that a donation to Ukraine, from Biden, even if it was Congress approved, can be redefined as a debt or a loan to Ukraine.
On no planet can a sane person argue that they’ve been robbed of something and demand it back with interest (a year after they gift wrapped it and gave it as a Christmas present in front of a room full of witnesses, asking for nothing in return) without damaging their own reputation.
If Trump had an objection with Ukraine getting so much stuff without any quid pro quo, fine. Fix it in the new Trump deal.
Ukraine has a moral debt to the USA, not a financial debt. Ukraine should be grateful for the support it has received, and it should pay the largesse back when it’s able, through trade and other means.
Charging them full whack for donated second hand goods (a lot of which was costing the US more to maintain, store or scrap than it cost to ship to Ukraine) was an appalling move by Trump and it’s good that he’s pedalled back on it.
If he wants to recover the money, chase the Democrat grifters first. Over half the “steal” he’s talked about never even left the USA.
Except, they can’t go on without more aid. This is the appropriate time to get all of that or walk away. There is nothing wrong with predicating more aid and risking ww3 on a better deal for US.

@MikeWaltz47: “This deal is good for the American taxpayer that is recouping the billions of dollars that we’ve put into supporting Ukraine. It’s good for Ukraine... in terms of its development and reconstruction — and it’s good for its security... All of this, nobody said could be done. @POTUS
said, ‘get it done.’”
OH! You must have missed this gem from a resident troll last night /s

Ukraine gave its minerals to Britain a long time ago. Trump got snookered and didn’t do his due diligence.
One notes that the domain name "kmu.ua.gov" cannot be directly accessed, and that using the gov.ua portal to search for kmu comes up with nothing. What was your source for the URL?
At least we can say that Trump has constantly spoken about ending the war, and that message is clear to everyone.
I assume Trump is again trying to move "outside the box." in January, the binary decision was either continue the neocon war, or walk-away.
The former was not possible, and the latter would make him, and the USA, look like Gerald Ford when NVA tanks rolled through Saigon.
So maybe he just wanted to create a sideshow to keep the USA talking and engaged, but in a non-military way
Its my best guess.
The behind the scenes issue here is the amount of Chinese investment now ongoing in the Russian territories of that country.
HUGE, influx of equipment and materials being put into those areas by Red China.
They are rebuilding all the manufacturing plants to refine raw mineral materials.
If Russia cuts off Odessa and that port structure, this deal is mute. Wont be worth the paper it is written on.
Just one more spin. We will see where it settles. If Ukraine Government (not Z) are saying they don’t know yet, it’s still murky.
