L.A. County approves $4-billion sex abuse settlement, largest in U.S. history

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the largest sex abuse settlement in U.S. history on Tuesday, agreeing to pay $4 billion to victims abused as children in county-run juvenile facilities and foster homes.

The vote is the culmination of years of fighting by victims, who argued that no one had paid the price for the rampant sexual abuse they said they suffered in county custody. The settlement includes nearly 7,000 claims, most of which involve alleged abuse from the 1980s through the 2000s.

“I never would have imagined persons hired to be the safety net and care for the most vulnerable could or would abuse their position and power in this way,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “It angers and sickens me.”

The thousands of claims tell the story of a county government that did little to screen for abusers, allowing a sprawling network of facilities for young people to become hunting grounds for predators. Victims said staffers were seldom disciplined for preying on vulnerable kids.

“We have to remember the people who are being compensated were victims of horrific abuse and rapes,” said Adam Slater, a lead plaintiffs’ attorney in the settlement. “This will hopefully give them some measure of closure and the ability to move on with their lives.”

The settlement dwarfs the most infamous sex abuse settlements. The Boy Scouts settlement was for $2.46 billion. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has paid out about $1.5 billion to victims of abuse by Catholic priests. Victims of USC gynecologist George Tyndall got $1.1 billion, and Michigan State University paid $500 million to victims of team doctor Larry Nassar.d

L.A. County, which has a roughly $48-billion budget, has said it will pay for the mammoth settlement by taking out bonds and draining...

So even after L.A. has to fork over 4 billion dollars for the sexual abuse of children in care of the county, California Democrats vote against outlawing paying 16 and 17 year olds for sex. I wonder how much of that 4 billion includes American tax payer dollars.

All of it, where else does government get money except through taxation? The city and county are essentially broke, and to borrow money to cover their budget will be prohibitive. Might as well cut staff and services but that would be too obvious.

Good, the county should refuse their demands. Imagine you going to your employer and saying: “I will refuse to work unless you pay me more!” The employer should say “you’re fired.” You humbly ask, not demand; that is where unions get it wrong. The union heads get more money than any member. It is all a scam for union heads.

When I worked for NY State I had to belong to the Union in order to get some of the medical benefits for myself and my two sons. Whenever contract negotiations came around, the Union issued cards so we could choose the one thing important to us that we wanted them to negotiate for. I always chose job safety. I worked in NY State’s prison system in uniform, so being safe on the job was more important to me than a raise, because the money would be worthless if you weren’t alive to benefit from it.

“American Federation of Teachers President Albert Shanker may have hit the key difference between his organization and both the public and the legislature a couple of years ago when he said, “When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

So I guess it’s not just a Catholic priest problem, is it? This filth is everywhere in the culture and needs to be obliterated.

Despite your hatred for the Catholic Church, government school teachers have a far higher rate of molesting children than Catholic priests.

And the Catholic Church does not have a pedophile problem. It has a homosexual predator problem.

Thankfully he died. He had four kids, I wonder what kind of a-holes they grew up to be.

This was his wife, and their mother:

Edith Shanker, a force in the teachers union movement, dies at 87

The lib Dims in Maryland thought they were so hip passing a law that eliminated the statute of limitations on sex abuse, thinking they would hit the Catholic and Boy Scouts. Then all the lawsuits against teachers and juvenile detention personnel started coming in, and they realized they were screwed, so they passed another law limiting payments for abuse by state employees. Not only did they get hit by lawsuits during the window between the two laws, but the new law is being challenged as discriminatory.

It looks like the state will be on the hook for billions, and they have a $3 billion shortfall on just their regular budget this year.

Once again government employees were paid and allowed to molest children. The taxpayers now must pay for this perverted perfidy.

Incorrect read. I am a Catholic and someone who has followed the priestly homosexual predator abuse problem very closely for decades. My point here was to make it crystal clear to people who hate the Church that, despite media perceptions, the problem of sex abuse is much, much larger in the popular culture and society at large than it is within the Catholic Church. We've been done dirty by the media.
