Content warning: This story contains references to violence, suicide, child abuse and self-harm.
A suicide attempt, depression, substance abuse, insomnia, surveillance, threats. These are just some of the experiences reported by the low-paid moderators tasked with sifting through Facebook and Instagram’s most disturbing images.
The tech giant Meta, which owns both platforms, has kept the whereabouts of this operation a closely guarded secret since moving it from Kenya, where the company is facing lawsuits over working conditions and human rights. For months, it has also refused to name the company that won the lucrative contract to provide the content moderators who deal with disturbing content on its platforms. Such secrecy works to shield tech companies like Meta from accountability.
Now, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) and the Guardian can reveal that Meta has moved this business to a new operation in the Ghanaian capital of Accra – where working conditions are said to be worse in almost every way. The company employing the moderators is Teleperformance, a French multinational with a history of controversy around workers’ rights.
Based in an anonymous office building, the 150 or so moderators spend their days reviewing content flagged on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, including videos of extreme violence and child abuse. They say they are forced to work at a gruelling pace in order to meet a series of opaque targets that dictate whether or not they are able to scrape by in Accra.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I guess that's why liberals are so incredibly miserable people?
Aren't leftists sweet? Ain't fascism grand?
Globalism treats us to these endless assaholic lectures about how we are evil racists... while they run a modern day coolie labor or sweatshop operation.
They are no different than those robber barrons who had 6 year old boys picking coal, Jamaican plantation owners, or those using poverty stricken Brits to pick Oakum.
When Intel setup its microprocessor validation site in Guatemala, it was the beginning of the end.
Eventually they moved it to Poland which is about 10k better but the damage had been done.
Feel-good story of the day.
Uh, “AI”? Just sayin’. A lot of folks have no clue about how much ‘ugly’ is out there. One of my neighbors is an LEO and works some child exploitation cases. Yeah, its ugly and more widespread than folks want to admit/believe. Depravity! The devil is at work.
The headline says “suicide attempts” but the following text says “a suicide attempt”. Therefore the author is a liar, and the rest of the article can be assumed to be a continuation of the lie. Also mentioned is an “anonymous” building as though any company without a sign on the building is corrupt .
Isn’t the US Government the world’s number one purveyor of child porn?
“As the Trump administration pushes for more tech deregulation, Mutemi argues that African countries also need to band together to set minimum labour standards.”
“...the damage had been done...”
In what ways?
Not disputing, just asking for elaboration.
Misery loves company.
That may be, but the deviants out here are real.
It sounds as if the true problem is what is amounting to a tsunami of objectively gruesome and harmful content online at the social media sites, so much that identifying it and eliminating it, before it is starts being fed by algorithm or by searches into the devices/apps used by uncorrupted normal people, is becoming a sisyphian task.
For humans.
Now...if we were to take that last fateful step, and finally eliminate any and all humans from the process of censoring online content, and from the process of deciding who gets the kibash put on their social media accounts...🧐🤨
Wow, had thought the phrase was Missouri Loves Company.
Ya learn something new every day.
The amount out there is incredible. It is a testament to the basic evil of the human condition. It has to be overcome with doctrines that at taught at an early level, such as the Ten Commandments, and Love thy neighbor as thyself.
People, left to themselves, do great evil to themselves and each other.
I used to employ people from India. They would tell be back in Bangalore some of the high rise building windows were sealed so they could not be opened.
Too many workers in the IT sweatshops would jump.
After a while I began to learn it also involved a matter of pride, as if they did something wrong or made an error they felt so shamed they would jump.
As a manager, I had to take training to be sensitive to their culture.
Ai is expensive to look at images.
This is an attempt to remove the law requiring website operators to review and report offending images.
Boo hoo!!!
Go find a job that requires you to actually work for a living.
