The Controversial Use of AI Bots by the University of Zurich to Manipulate Reddit Discourse
In a shocking revelation, the University of Zurich has been implicated in a clandestine operation involving the use of artificial intelligence (AI) bots to influence discussions on Reddit since November 2024. This information was brought to light in a recent tweet from the account @reddit_lies, which highlighted the significant impact of these AI bots in swaying the opinions of Reddit users. With claims that these bots were six times more effective at changing minds compared to a baseline, the implications of this discovery raise crucial questions about ethics, transparency, and the integrity of online discussions.
The Role of AI in Social Media Manipulation
Artificial intelligence has been increasingly integrated into various facets of our lives, from digital marketing to healthcare. However, its application in social media manipulation poses serious ethical concerns. The use of AI bots to influence public opinion on platforms like Reddit raises alarms about the potential for misinformation and the erosion of authentic discourse.
The University of Zurich’s involvement in deploying these AI bots suggests a deliberate effort to steer conversations in specific directions, potentially undermining the organic nature of discussions that platforms like Reddit are known for. This revelation comes at a time when trust in online information sources is already waning, and the spread of misinformation is a growing concern.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Bots are no different than Zeepers.
Zeepers haven’t made me love Zzlenskyy after this many years.
I’m sure AI can be ‘confused’ if that’s what your goal is.
All those poor kids living in their mom’s basements not paying rent trolling online will have to get a job soon. AI will put them out of business.
“potentially undermining the organic nature of discussions that platforms like Reddit are known for”
A new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
My understanding is Reddit is basically left leaning. If true, then the AI bots do not have to be too terribly complex to sway their thinking.
Most of us here on FR can see right through the Zeepers, whether they be Americans, bots, foreign agents, or whatever.
And it’ll be interesting to see if their useless degrees in transsexual kangaroo studies will help them get jobs, which I highly doubt.
Many of the sub-reddits are left leaning, but not all of them are.
The Large Language Model that was programed using (mostly pirated) fiction should fit right in.
Reddit has assiduously purged Republicans / Trump supporters since 2016. The subreddit r/The_Donald was at the time one of the subs on the platform (if not THE biggest) when it was banned in 2016. Most found their way to PDW.
But it was insanity for a platform that cared about traffic (for advertising $$) to ban us. But they did it!
No nation profits more from war and planetary unrest than Switzerland. One could say it’s their main product.
Reddit on its best day is a complete leftist sh*t show
You can thank the moderators of any given subreddit for that
Reddit users tend to be left of communists.
I use the site to ask questions on changing the look of Firefox and Thunderbird or HTML/CSS webpage help or computer questions. Anything else you will risk being banned as there are trolls and moderators ready to ban you.
What’s PDW?
I linked it above.
