I have no degreee. Worked in IT 1992-2025. For most large operations IBM is the best. But historically IBM has been focused on quarterly profit and the cash cow that gives it.

IBM hardware can run very efficiently. But the $ is in inefficient use to consume big CPU time. So IBM encourages its customers to code inefficiently and then buy more add ons to consume the inefficiency.

IBM has found their business model to be successful, even though Snowflake in the cloud is not worth dozens of IBMs.

“So IBM encourages its customers to code inefficiently and then buy more add ons to consume the inefficiency.”

That intrigues me. I know several programming languages,
I know how to design compilers and programming languages.
Unless it is an act of sabotage how do you purposely make a machine run less efficiently?
Granted my programming and design experience is in real time systems, but that sabotage is easy to detect.

Just curious.

I was at IBM mainframe shops in the midwest that used DB2 and SQL. Through its salesmen, Through its manuals and training material, through most everything it did, it encouraged inefficient design and coding of SQL.

I would go into a shop with the assigned mission to improve the efficiency and cut cost of CPU usage. Management would often tell me, “But IBM says it can’t be done. That all we can do is throw more hardware at it.”

This isn’t 100% the case. Back then the Chicago DB2 user group encouraged efficiency. But they were the outlier.

The same is true historically. In the 1970s a large insurance company ventured into the mainframe world. IBM wanted them to solve everything with hardware. A consultant came in & taught them IMS and COBOL for IMS.. in the 1970s. That auto system was so well designed that in 2013 it was still the backbone of the large insurance company doing a very good job at competing in the auto insurance business.

That insurance company was one of the largest IBM customers. They knew how to see thru the sales con of IBM.

“was he a diversity hire by the store?”

Yes, you could say that. He is white and English speaking, representing the 20% minority in this Arkansas poultry processing town.

“DB2 and SQL”
I never learned DB2 but I was trained to use Structured Query Language( SQL).
That is really archaic stuff!
I always used Relational Database Software to design/organize data bases. Many times faster!
You need a PhD to understand the math behind it, but it is
way faster!

Yeah, better check that. Too many firms will ship your job to India and not think twice.

I think there is a miscommunication. I meant to convey that better check IBM and others so they are not just importing h1Bs after they claim investment in the US.

DB2 and hierarchical database systems are faster for simple transactional processes. Much faster. So the best for accounting transaction processing

Liberals, and some conservatives, don’t understand the importance of having manufacturing in our country within our borders. It is as important as having secure borders - another notion not understood by liberals.

Unless it is an act of sabotage how do you purposely make a machine run less efficiently?

Which of these is more efficient in most languages?

B= A*A
or
B= A^2

for i=1-millions
Matrix(i)= i
or
Matrix= zeros(millions)
for i=1-millions
Matrix(i)= i

And that's just a line or two of code. Imagine how much excess work is in programs of thousands or millions of lines? Not to mention the inefficiencies above are things a lot of programmers do because they don't know and efficiency isn't a priority in today's world, processing power is cheap. These aren't even sabotage, these are just how many programmers write the code.
