Exclusive: Pakistan defence minister says military incursion by India is imminent

ISLAMABAD, April 28 (Reuters) - Pakistan's defence minister said on Monday that a military incursion by neighbouring India was imminent in the aftermath of a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir last week, as tensions rise between the two nuclear-armed nations.

The militant attack killed 26 people and triggered outrage in Hindu-majority India, along with calls for action against Muslim-majority Pakistan. India accuses Pakistan of backing militancy in Kashmir, a region both claim and have fought two wars over.

"We have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken," Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif told Reuters in an interview at his office in Islamabad.

Asif said India's rhetoric was ramping up and that Pakistan's military had briefed the government on the possibility of an Indian attack. He did not go into further details on his reasons for thinking an incursion was imminent.

After the Kashmir attack, India identified two suspected militants as Pakistani. Islamabad has denied any role and called for a neutral investigation.

As frightening as the possibility is of seeing two nuclear nations exchanging nuclear weapons attacks in anger, you may bet that all the other nations are watching closely to take lessons and learn how it goes for them.

I was reading an article earlier about the nuclear policy of Pakistan, they have a first strike policy which means according to their policy they can launch first and not in response to another country’s launch.

The article went on to say that Pakistan would lose a conventional war with India because India’s conventional military is roughly twice the size of Pakistan’s.

If India’s military crosses over the border into Pakistan it will be very interesting to see how Pakistan responds given their nuclear policy.

Once would like to think that “policy” like that is your basic bluff deterrence. IE: They wouldn’t go full nuclear first strike at the drop of a hat, but they want aggressors to think that they could.

A tit-for-tat escalation is much more likely, hopefully reaching a stasis that where peace and calmer heads can prevail.

The only scenario where Pakistan would go first strike is if they really felt that India wanted to perform a full scale invasion and if they actually thought they could pull it off without India being able to execute nuclear retaliation in time. Otherwise, they aren’t going to take the risk of such a huge escalation.

No worries - the Ukraine fans have been telling me for over three years that nuclear war is impossible...

After the Kashmir attack, India identified two suspected militants as Pakistani.

Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were killed by a Serb civilian, a militant if you will, part of a larger group of would-be assassins. Things got out of hand.
