'We have more in common with America than the rest of Canada'
BBC News ^ | April 26, 2025 | Nadine Yousif

The threat to Canada's sovereignty from US President Donald Trump has dominated the election, but the country also faces a challenge from within. Some western Canadians, fed up with a decade of Liberal rule, are openly calling for separation.

Standing in front of a crowd of about 100 squeezed into a small event hall in the city of Lethbridge, Dennis Modry is asking locals about Alberta's future.

Who thinks Alberta should have a bigger role in Canada, he asks? A dozen or so raise their hands.

Who thinks the province should push for a split from Canada and form its own nation? About half the crowd raise their hands.

"How many people would like Alberta to join the US?" Another show of support from half the crowd.

Mr Modry, a retired heart surgeon, is a co-leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a grassroots organisation pushing for an independence referendum.

The possibility of a split has long been a talking point in this conservative-leaning province. But two factors have given it new momentum: Trump's comments about making Canada the 51st US state, and the subsequent boost that has given the Liberal Party in the polls ahead of Monday's federal election.

Mr Modry told the BBC the separatist movement has grown in recent months - driven in part, he believes, by the president's rhetoric.

"We're not interested in that", he said. "We're interested in Alberta sovereignty."

Alberta has lithium and uranium and other precious minerals.

When I’m in Alberta and I’m asked to choose between Ottawa and Washington as my nation’s capital, I say: “NEITHER. I would pick Calgary.”

Never happen.

The Democrats would require what we did in the late 1950’s: have both Alaska and Hawaii enter statehood, with Alaska being GOP and Hawaii being Dem, then twist, wiggle, bend, and fraud their way to getting AK senators as well. Today, it would be West Canada as the 51st state, and Puerto Rico as the 52nd, two immediate Dem senators, then twist/wiggle/bend/fraud their way to getting WC senators as well.

Never happen. The Democrats would require what we did in the late 1950’s:

If the Republicans control Congress, why wouldn't it happen?

If any part of Canda were to join and become part of theh U.S., the country should be split into liberal and conservative states, and then only the conservative states tp become American states. Let the liberals join California and then let them join China or N.Korea..

We loved Alberta! It is so beautiful and the people were so nice and we would go there any chance we had if we lived closer!

Yep. Choosing DC would be as bad or worse than choosing Ottawa.

I’m sure Albertans would prefer Montana gun laws over Ottawa’s!

This is a similar situation to the counties in Eastern Oregon and Washington that are stuck in a liberal hell hole and want to join Idaho, the areas of Eastern Oregon and Washington are rural and will never be able to override the votes of Seattle and Portland but in Idaho they would be part of the majority.

“Some western Canadians, fed up with a decade of Liberal rule, are openly calling for separation.”

I wouldn't do that if I were them.

When Southerners invoked the provisions of the Declaration of Independence (consent of the governed) Lincoln killed or imprisoned every man he could that supported the notion; destroyed southern cities, farms, and families.

I have no doubt Canadian big government would follow the Washington D.C. big government precedent.

Probably because of the filibuster in the Senate.

Senate Democrats would filibuster a bill to admit a conservative leaning state to the union. But they might be okay with admitting Alberta, if we were also admitting a liberal leaning state to the union to balance things out.

a dream for me (as one who lives in far, far left western Washington) is eastern Washington and Oregon (and perhaps eastern Cali) with Idaho, Montana and WY bring in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Western Washington, Oregon and Cali can fall into the ocean after the next big one.

Still a bad deal, they'll get 2 Dem Senators from Puerto Rico and it may be 1 Dem/1 Rep from Alberta.

Western Canada is headed for separation. One way or another. You speak as a coward would or one who has no appreciation of freedom. Perhaps I misunderstood the point you were trying to make.

All we need to hear now like the saying when Quebec wanted to separate & by other Canadians, “My Canada includes Quebec”.

It’s Alberta that we should recruit to be the 51st state, not all of Canada.
