SANDY — A Utah couple is being accused of money laundering and smuggling oil into the U.S. alongside Mexican cartels, after they were arrested during a multi-state raid by U.S. Marshals, according to court documents.

James Lael Jensen and his wife, Kelly Anne Jensen, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday. The couple and two of his sons are being federally indicted for allegedly conspiring to smuggle 2,881 shipments of oil from Mexico that they knew were illegal.

The family is accused of moving at least $300 million from Mexico to the U.S.

The couple was arrested on Wednesday at their 26,893 square foot mansion in Sandy, valued at $9.1 million, according to a person close to the situation, who requested they be kept anonymous due to cartel involvement. The source said the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Apprehension Team showed up, with a battering ram in tow — a tool used by SWAT teams to breach doors, concrete and brick walls.

The U.S. District Court of Utah’s detention documents allege James and Kelly Jensen, and their two sons, Max and Zachary, conspired to “launder proceeds from sales of illegally imported crude oil. The payments for this crude oil were directed to businesses in Mexico that operate only through the permission of Mexican criminal organization. James Jensen was aware that the payments he made were going to these Mexican criminal organizations.”

The charges state the money laundering and illegal imports began in May 2022.

I guess their neighbors now know how the couple afforded the 26,893 square foot mansion in Sandy, valued at $9.1 million,

Nice digs. I’d like a blueprint on how to smuggle oil out of Mexico in that kind of quantity and NOT get caught.

That was my first thought as well.

Doesn’t say much good for our border security!

This is interesting.

I didn’t know there was a large clandestine oil trade in the US.

I wonder who buys it and for what purpose.

They must in turn pretend to be legitimate oil importers or something.

Exactly. It wasn’t obtained legally.

“How? Had to be hard to move crude oil.”

Not when you own an oil import company located near the border.

Who said crime doesn’t pay?
29,000 sq ft house doesn’t mow its own lawn or clean its own pool or dust its own tops or cook meals, ya know? Cleaning the gutters is a full time job!

And nobody in Pemex or the cartel will go to jail, although several of the Pemex and government oil ministers might be taken out by the cartel to keep them silent.

There was another story similar to this, but the amount of oil was in the few thousands of gallons not this scale. I had no idea how, or why. I suppose if you did have a legitimate oil import terminal or pipe, you could run more through it that is stolen on the other side without reporting it.
