Former Libertarian National Committee Chair Nicholas Sarwark is calling on the Libertarian Party to use President Donald Trump’s recent tariff proposals as a chance to “reboot” the party and reassert itself as a leading voice for free markets and limited government.
In a recent opinion piece for MSNBC, Sarwark, who chaired the Libertarian National Committee from 2014 to 2020, compares Trump’s economic approach to that of former President Richard Nixon, noting that Nixon’s use of wage and price controls in the early 1970s helped spur the creation of the Libertarian Party. Sarwark argues that, like Nixon, Trump’s use of tariffs and economic interventions risks concentrating power and inviting corruption.
Sarwark critiques Trump’s previously proposed 10% blanket tariff on all imports and almost 60% tariff on Chinese goods, calling them a “massive tax hike on American consumers.” He warns that such policies could be used to grant political favors and lead to corruption, as businesses may seek exemptions through personal or political connections.
“Now would be a great time for the Libertarian Party, founded in opposition to Republican corruption, to oppose another president’s meddling with the markets, potentially for his own gain,” Sarwark writes in his article.
He also argues that the Libertarian Party has drifted from its foundational economic platform and become increasingly focused on right-wing cultural issues. Sarwark points to the rise of the Mises Caucus in 2017 and the 2022 removal of the party’s anti-bigotry and pro-choice planks at its national convention. He further criticizes former National Chair Angela McArdle for elevating figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump during the 2024 campaign, claiming it came at the expense of supporting the party’s own presidential nominee, Chase Oliver.
Despite these challenges, Sarwark believes the current political atmosphere offers an opportunity for the Libertarian Party to refocus. He urges the party to recommit to opposing protectionism and appeal to disaffected Republican voters who continue to support free market principles and civil liberties. Sarwark also praises current LNC Chair Steven Nekhaila for publicly opposing Trump’s proposed tariffs and encourages libertarians to take action both electorally and through protesting alongside “like-minded individuals.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
The Lib party is back helping RATS get elected.
What if the tariffs work? What are they going to sell then?
As long as the libertarian party continues to support illegal aliens and LGBT they are burnt toast.
The LP used to rely on the LGBT and marijuana issues to attract support. But these are no longer fringe issues. They've both been "won."
Gay marriage is legal. Pot smoking is mostly legal. And both major parties support gay rights and pot smokers to some extent (although Democrats more so than Republicans).
So yes, the LP is running out of issues. I can see how they'd hope opposing tariffs would present an opportunity.
Losertarianism and its insane open border 🦬💩 is just as dead to me now than ever before.
Sarwark loves unreciprocated tariffs of other countries on our goods.
What, he doesn't?
What will this supposed libertarian say when the outcome of Trump's tariffs will be less tariffs globally?
When was the Libertarian Party ever “Booted” in the first place
Nope.
To the left of the Democrat party on immigration, that is hard to do but the libertarians did it.
“Former LNC Chair Says Trump Tariffs Are a Chance to Reboot Libertarian Party”
why does this clown car need rebooting, seems funny enough to me already ...
The Libertarian Party needs to work-up a whole new set of values.
Mostly they are known for being irreligious and amoral-leaning with a greedy appetite for money made most anyway that is not stealing at gunpoint.
Agreed. About the only thing Libertarians bring to the table is if they make enough noise for small govt to get Republicans to agree to and be real conservatives. I’m talking things us conservatives agree with and often fuss at Republicans for not doing enough of — the Libertarians sometimes help us get better Republicans in the primaries.
LOSERTARIANS are Never-Trumpers and many of them are merely DISTRACTORS serving the interests of the DemocRATS, GLOBALISTS AND NEOCONS.
The operative question is: How much of our economy do we have to give to totalitarian countries before we wake up and start producing again? ......Enough that they defeat us?
I must have missed when they were “booted” the first time. They’ve always been around.
Exactly. THe libertarians have become libertines. No gubmint rules. Someone steels something you can sue him for damages in a court of law, which is a function of the government they don’t believe in. Libertarians have long departed from reason and become unhinged. Pity. When they are not off their meds they have a role. Although we will never have a city of god on earth, preaching the City of God serves a purpose. Edging the nose of the ship; towards more freedom while navigating around the rocks and shoals of life is a positive, but the ideal comes to ruin when you put your ship of freedom on the rocks.
When I was a lot younger I was attracted to libertarian party becaus of their emphasis on person AMERICAN liberty.
But their anti-National defense stands put me off.
Today their wildly liberal stand that everybody that illegally makes it to America gets the same rights as Americans born and raised here has totally lost me.
So I’m in a quandary, there are no Political parties in America I can fully support. Hence, I vote as independent, which is not a party.
And as such puts millions of Americans at a disadvantage as our system is basically a two party system, so we get no seniority in our government. As a consequence are ruled by people we cannot tolerate.
