White House: 18 Countries Have Made Formal Trade Proposals to U.S.

The Trump administration has received official trade offers from 18 countries, and its trade negotiation team has meetings scheduled with 34 countries this week, the White House announced Tuesday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt provided an update on trade negotiations during a briefing on Tuesday.

“There is a lot of progress being made. We now have 18 proposals on paper that have been brought to the trade team,” she detailed. “Again, these are proposals on paper that countries have proposed to the Trump administration and to our government.”

Over 100 countries have expressed interest in making a deal, per the press secretary.

“You have Secretary Bessent, Secretary Lutnick, Ambassador Greer, NEC Director Hassett, and Peter Navarro, the entire trade team meeting with 34 countries this week alone,” she added. “We are moving at Trump speed to ensure these deals are made on behalf of the American worker and the American people.”

Leavitt also emphasized that Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday that the United States and India have established terms of reference for trade.

“That is a big deal. We know when we look at the numbers, the monetary trade barriers and the nonmonetary trade barriers from India, they have been ripping off the United States and American workers for a very long time,” she said.

“So the fact that the Vice President, with Prime Minister Modi on that trip in India, announced these terms of reference, which is essentially a framework to move the ball forward to sign a good trade deal between our two nations, is great progress,” Leavitt continued.

Leavitt also revealed that the president said that trade negotiations between the United States and China are going “very well.”

This will work - just like closing the border worked... Good for Trump.

i’m waiting for all the paid trump-hating trolls here to attack President Trump’s various trade negotiators on this thread since they know better than to attack President Trump himself ... you know, their standard attacks that President Trump’s representatives are incompetent, aren’t working fast enough, good enough, etc., etc. ...

Interesting that Trump is sending Vance to India. This will be somewhat of a test for him to see how he handles an important negotiation. India’s not our most important trading partner, but they’re still significant. And of course the Indian lineage of Vance’s wife certainly doesn’t hurt as far as encouraging good will between parties.

The Trump critics don’t understand or pretend not to understand that what they describe as a sloppy, failed roll out was actually a deliberate feature.

It was the only way to get everyone to the table quickly. Scare the hell out of everybody with massive tariffs for a week or two to show how far you’re willing to go, then back off for those countries that want to negotiate. The tariffs can always be slapped back on for any countries negotiating in bad faith, and knowing that, gives countries all the more incentive to reach a quick deal.

Dealing in this way also discourages our trading partners from working behind our backs to create a united front to oppose us. Instead it creates a competition among them to be the first to reach a deal. To heighten their motivation, Trump has suggested that those who reach a deal first will get better terms.

Trump’s rollout was the opposite of poorly planned. It was actually quite brilliant, especially if you consider that had he tried the traditional approach of negotiating with Japan, South Korea, UK, EU, etc. individually, one at a time, it would have been impossible to institute such a massive change in trade policy at all, let alone in a timely manner. Had he taken the traditional approach, as he did in his first term, he’d have been lucky to get a handful of trade deals done by the end of his term.

“The Trump critics don’t understand or pretend not to understand that what they describe as a sloppy, failed roll out was actually a deliberate feature.”

The is like saying that the Yankee rout at First Bull Run was a strategic ploy aimed at giving the Rebs a false sense of security.

The battleplan should have been to take on China alone. The hodgepodge of global skirmishes detracted from and diluted the impact of a focused initiative. India and the EU don’t present existential threats. China does.

And putting on 100+% tariffs was just plain silly. We as a country aren’t in a position to build thousands of factories overnight to replace Chinese-made goods, which is the point that Wal-Mart, Target, and Home Depot CEOs made to the President yesterday.

A policy of moderately higher tariffs COMBINED with tax incentives for new, job-producing factories in the US would best serve our economic independence.
