Justice Kavanaugh Shocked State Founded On Religious Liberty Now Won’t Let Parents Opt Kids Out Of LGBTQ Storybooks

Justice Brett Kavanaugh expressed surprise Tuesday that schools in a state founded on religious liberty are now banning parents with religious objections from opting their young children out of LGBTQ storybook lessons.

In Mahmoud v. Taylor, a majority of the Supreme Court appeared ready to side with parents who want to opt their children out of Montgomery County Board of Education’s mandated storybook readings involving pronouns, transgender children and pride parades.

“I guess I am a bit mystified, as a lifelong resident of the county, how it came to this,” Kavanaugh said during oral arguments. “Can you just tell us what happened in March 2023?”

Eric Baxter, senior counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said the district promised for an entire year that parents would be notified and allowed to opt-out of the lessons.

“The last notice happened on March 22, 2023,” he said. “The very next day, overnight, with no explanation, the board came out and said we’re changing the rule because we want all students to be instructed on inclusivity.”

Justice Neil Gorsuch also raised questions about statements made by board members involved in the policy, noting some suggested students were parroting parents’ “dogma” and that parents were promoting hate, taking a viewpoint endorsed by white supremecists and xenophobes.

“Does that suggest a hostility towards religion?” he asked.

[snip]

In the end, Kavanaugh came back to Montgomery County’s status as “a beacon of religious liberty for all these years.”

“Maryland was founded on religious liberty and religious tolerance, a haven for Catholics escaping persecution from persecution in England going back to 1649,” he told Schoenfeld. “I guess I’m surprised, given that this is the hill we’re going to die on in terms of not respecting religious liberty.”

The case is Mahmoud v Taylor.

I didn't listen to the oral argument this morning because I had to leave for a lunch date.

If anyone wants to listen to it, the audio is at the below link:

“endorsed by white supremecists and xenophobes”

Brett Kavanaugh seems a bit rusty on his Maryland history. The colony began in 1634 as a haven for Catholics, but they were always a minority of the colonists. They established religious toleration. In 1649 the Puritans took over and ended religious toleration. Until 1776 Catholics could not hold office in Maryland—it’s only when Maryland threw off its allegiance to Britain that Catholics got equal rights and Charles Carroll of Carrollton was sent to Congress where he became one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence even though he was not present there on July 4, 1776.

Getting geared up for the decisions that will come out at the end of their session - June. Guess we better buckle up because what we see so far, it’s going to get even more confusing and disastrous!

MontCo has been brutally gerrymandered into my district.

At no point does this tortuous path come close to us physically.

My ancestors took the Cromwell Cruise Lines here in the 1600s and soon dropped the Mc and the pope to survive.
Just over the line in southwest PA there’s a cemetery full of ancestors who kept the Mc.

“I guess I am a bit mystified, as a lifelong resident of the county, how it came to this,” Kavanaugh said...

The handjob never noticed what a filthy communist dump Montgomery County is, and he’s on the Supreme Court? I hope to God Trump never again appoints eaterners to judgeships. Better yet, appoint no existing judges to higher courts.

This is a large part of the problem: these clowns have no idea what regular people are being subjected to by the leftists. They are insulated and isolated from the populace.

I think you’re misunderstanding. The way I read it is ...

Kavanaugh can’t believe parents aren’t allowed to excuse their own kids from gay porn. Since the state was founded on religious liberty, parents should be free to keep the kids from the books.

(So many titles are poorly written, sadly.)

“School choice is on the way nationwide.”

It certainly can’t hurt.

BTW, my 14-year-old, home-schooled, nephew is a contestant in a national Bible Trivia Contest soon. He and his brothers kicked butt when taking the required NYS exams with the public school students.

I hope that when choice is more prevalent, kids will get smarter, not dumber.

I do not see that happening, the Department of Education has not been abolished yet.

I hope it all does though.

Biggest “surprise” is the ignorance of the justices for what is going on in the country. Do they stay in the convent to shut out the world??

For sure, the union won. But you can still opt out of school in toto, so far.

I'm not saying it's a financial boon school at home, but hey, folks died at Gettysburg for the cause: "It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to...."

Because there exists few better, more effective places to engage in Child Sex Grooming, than the public schools...

The sick, degenerate proponents of this consider it an existential dilemma, given their disdain for the way normal humans propagate.

Grooming is what keeps them after our children. They have no other effective way to increase, or even maintain their numbers.

Since they can’t propagate the only way they survive is to recruit. Lets call this what it is Criminal Child Abuse, lets not wait for these depraved pedophiles to touch another kid, arrest them now and prosecute to the full extent of the law !
