Losing International Students Could Devastate Many Colleges

Xiaofeng Wan, a former admissions officer at Amherst College, now works as a private consultant to international students who want to come to the United States. This week, as he held meetings in China with prospective students, he sensed a deep uncertainty among their parents.

“They really don’t know whether they should send their children to a country where they don’t welcome Chinese students or they see China as a hostile competitor,” Dr. Wan said by telephone from Beijing. “It’s an unprecedented situation that we’ve never seen before.”

For years, American colleges and universities have attracted growing numbers of international students who often pay full tuition, effectively subsidizing domestic students.

But the Trump administration’s recent move to deport hundreds of students here on visas, and his trade war with China, have stoked fears that the United States is no longer a welcoming place for international students. This week, the administration also asked Harvard to hand over lists of foreign students, adding to a sense of panic on campuses.

Suzanne Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools, said the chaos of visa terminations had fueled concerns among many students. “I think it sends a powerful signal to friends and family at home that the U.S. is not a safe place to be anymore,” she said.

If the nation gains a reputation for being hostile to international students, it could be devastating for many American colleges and universities.

There were more than 1.1 million international students in the United States during the 2023-24 academic year, according to a recent report released by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education. The number includes students who remain in the country briefly after graduation to gain work experience. The report identifies...

Good. Toss all the malcontents, agent provocateurs, criminals, predators, laggards, and entitlement abusers hiding under a “student” visa back to the hell-holes they came from.

American colleges building a business model around educating foreign students was never sustainable. I have zero sympathy - a lot of colleges should not even exist. They actively encourage young people to go deep into debt to obtain worthless, meaningless degrees that will never earn their holders a penny.

And? So what! These colleges should all be sued for crewing up other countries kids. Do you think the parents sent their kids here to be farting around in the streets with pizza place tablecloths on their heads and screaming for genocide of the Jews?

"For years, American colleges and universities have attracted growing numbers of international students who often pay full tuition, effectively subsidizing domestic students."

Don't the international students compete for admission with domestic students? How are international students subsidizing domestic students if domestic students are being replaced with international students?

“international students who often pay full tuition, effectively subsidizing domestic students”

Gee, does that include all the illegal alien domestic students? That would REALLY be too bad.

Keep the international students but charge the universities a stiff (25-30%) federal tax on tuition for every international.

Regardless how big any self important institution is, if their model can’t withstand making America great again they’ll have to rethink it.

Sorry, not sorry.

Ok….there are a zillion people the Slimes could interview for this article.

We get…

Xiaofeng Wan, a former admissions officer at Amherst College, now works as a private consultant to international students who want to come to the United States. This week, as he held meetings in China with prospective students, he sensed a deep uncertainty among their parents.

“They really don’t know whether they should send their children to a country where they don’t welcome Chinese students or they see China as a hostile competitor,” Dr. Wan said by telephone from Beijing.”

Why do we get such a needle-in-a-haystack?

Well…. Dr. Xiaofeng Wan has over 11 years of experience in highly selective college admissions in the United States, including more than 9 years at the nation's most prestigious liberal arts college, Amherst College, in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Ah….this guy is on the leftist elite speed dial. And his rates probably beyond the reach of mere mortals..

Which means that the headline should be “Snobbitorium Ivys Having Trouble Obtaining Feedstock for Human Trafficking and Brainwashing.”

there’s a huge difference between allowing a reasonable number of genuine foreign students in ... and letting (or inviting) your campus to be overrun with Arab/Muslim Terrorists/Agitators and Communist Chinese spies.

This especially applies to public colleges ..which are intended to make educational opportunities available for Americans, not Krapistanis or ChiComs

They could try teaching what students need to know to succeed in life.

They could, really.

Why would this devastate colleges? THere are 1 million foreign students, out of about 18 million total college students in this country. ARE THEY saying that some colleges have far larger shares of foreigners, such as 1/3 of the student body?

Is the bikini inspection department part of the women’s studies department?

I’m always puzzled about women’s studies. The study of women may be fascinating in some ways, but how many jobs in the economy call for degrees in women’s studies in particular?
