For those who spend time in this North Baltimore neighborhood, the only sight on Monday more notable than the pair of armed guards standing outside a walk-up seafood restaurant, may have been the empty corner directly across the street. According to Councilwoman Odette Ramos, that corner of Greenmount and Venable Avenues has served as an open-air drug market for more than 10 years.
"The neighbors have worked really hard to get several drug corners out of that area. This one on Greemount and Venable is still there," Councilwoman Ramos told WMAR-2 News in an interview. "I will say that corner has not been violent until recently. So something has changed. There's been sort of a peaceful coexistence until now, and it's just not acceptable what's happening."
On Saturday afternoon, March 29th, two shooters fired into the line of people waiting outside "I Love Seafood." Three men and a woman, ranging in age from 18 to 60 years old, were hurt. Police are still searching for the two men pictured below.
Not long after the shooting, guards were posted up outside the restaurant. The owner hired private security to patrol the corner.
"Maybe it can stop some of the violence and some of the problems happening with this strip," customer Misha Rogers said on Monday.
She's been wanting to try the popular seafood joint for a while now, but if she hadn't seen the security guards outside as she drove by on Monday, "I wouldn't have stopped," she said. When asked why, she replied, "It's Greenmount Avenue. Why would I?"
Another customer who didn't want to be on camera said the same, when asked if seeing the guards made him feel safer: "Absolutely. Other than that, I probably wouldn't have even came up here."

So for 10 years an open air drug market was “acceptable”?!? Why did it take innocent people just randomly being shot for something to be done?!? And even then it took a private citizen to do something about it?
Why the hell did the city of Baltimore tolerate this?!? Clearly this is a know issue on this problem and has been for more than a decade.. yet nothing?

Quick note #1 to those guards: Police officers have qualified immunity (usually). But you don’t. So if you unholster your weapon, you’ll probably end up defending yourself in court.
Quick note #2 to those guards: Maryland ain’t Texas.
North Baltimore? Say, isn’t that in Maryland? If only they had someone in that state who knows how to talk to gangsters, and who could be their advocate in these times of trouble. I bet he could put an end to this violence.
I was attending an Army school at Ft Holabird (no longer active) in 68. Arrived at train station mid day sunday and decided since it was a fine day to walk from the train station to fort. Along come the coppers, they stop and asked where I was going and why. I told them. They said hop in we will take you, you will never get there otherwise! When I got out, one of the coppers said take a cab next time for your safety.
That says a lot about the area right there, none of it good.
Must be good seafood.
“figure out the best way to hold the owner accountable”
right .... hold the building owner accountable because no businesses will lease his building because rampant violent crime unchecked by government policies drives away possible customers ... so, once again: blame the victim!
makes sense only to a Democrat government official ....
Noticed it was a couple of blocks from the Old ORIOLES-Memorial Stadium where we used to pay neighborhood people to 'protect' our vehicles from vandalism.

Sounds like the owner refused to pay the protection racket and is now paying private security.
Greenmount Avenue is basically a war zone. I wouldn’t drive on it much less stop at any establishment there.
And that was in 1968! Things have only gone downhill since. The only time I go downtown is to attend a sports event or concert. It ain’t worth it otherwise.
There are some small bohemian neighborhoods in downtown Baltimore. But I would not say they are ‘safe’….
