In the wake of the deadly shooting at Florida State University on Thursday, a portrait of the alleged gunman -- the son of a local sheriff's deputy -- has emerged.

At least two people were killed and six others were injured when shots rang out near the Tallahassee institution's Student Union, officials said during a press conference.

In the 70’s FSU was often referred to as commie U. I sure it hasn’t swung to the right since then.

The shooter accessed his mother’s home defense firearm. It was her service weapon, and as it aged out, she was able to buy it from the department.

Likely taking some form of ADHD medication, similar to the one involved in the case of the individual in Texas who stabbed Austin Metcalf.

Tallahassee has a large black population. It’s a little blue island in a sea of red.

Snap crackle pop and bang! it hit the national nuze as if the most important thing that ever happened ever.
Let these ‘things’ and what they do continue in obscurity. It is an idiot thing and has nothing to d0 with inanimate object misbehavior.

Tallahassee SDS protests Trump’s agenda and FSU policies in campus rally

Tallahassee Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) marched on Jan. 14 to oppose President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s agenda. The protest occurred less than a week before Trump’s inauguration.

Roughly 15 protestors started their rally around the Legacy Fountain in Landis Green. Here, they passed out flyers with written chants, held a Palestinian flag, and signs with phrases like “Abortion is Healthcare.” The group began their march toward the Integration Statue shortly after 4 p.m., where they set up to make speeches.

The organization promoted the rally on Instagram, featuring messages like: “FIGHT TRUMP’S BACKWARDS AGENDA,” “END THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA,” “STOP RACIST ATTACKS ON IMMIGRANTS” and “DEFEND WOMEN’S & LGBTQ+ RIGHTS!”

“It has become increasingly obvious that the agenda of Donald Trump, the agenda of Gov. Ron Desantis, the agenda of President Richard McCullum and the Board of Trustees are one and the same,” Tallahassee SDS Planning Committee Chair Oliver Cheese said. “They are all united in repressing student protest, in supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza and in continuing to silence, to repress and to beat back queer people, trans people, black people and poor people.”

Another concern stemmed from a measure in 2023 that prevented universities from allocating funds to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives (SB 266). While FSU’s DEI office was shut down, no employees were fired, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

“FSU has been rolling back DEI and LGBTQ+ based diversity initiatives for a year now, more or less,” Tallahassee SDS Communications Committee co-chair JJ Glueck said. “We’re addressing Trump in particular because he is the face of a lot of these policies in ways, but we’re also talking directly to the university. We don’t want them to think we’re okay with his agenda or their agenda, which echoes his.”

In the last year, FSU penalized the group for multiple conduct infractions. After forming a protest at an FSU Board of Trustees meeting on Nov. 10, 2023, Tallahassee SDS was de-listed as a recognized student organization at FSU until May 15, 2025.

Once the protesters reached the Integration Statue, Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD) officers stood on guard and groups of onlookers began to form.

“These people are usually pretty entertaining, usually not for good reasons,” Phoenix Ikner, a political science major, said. “I think it’s a little too late, he’s [Trump] already going to be inaugurated on Jan. 20 and there’s not really much you can do unless you outright revolt, and I don’t think anyone wants that.”

Some observers countered the ideas of the protesters.

“It’s an anti-Trump rally, and obviously I don’t quite agree, so I just think it might be a fine opportunity to not necessarily culture-jam, but make our presence known,” FSU economics major Felix Bartolett said.

Others were drawn in from the organization’s Instagram post, including students wearing hats reading “Make America Great Again.” One brought a small American flag.

“I’m the only one here with an American flag,” FSU economics major Connor Lee said. “They don’t have an American flag. They have other flags that are not American, so this is not going to save America, I don’t think. This is ridiculous.”

Tallahassee SDS hosted guest speakers and shouted chants such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!”

“There’s a lot of irony in what they’re protesting, and the scary thing is that they can’t see that,” FSU interdisciplinary medical science major Katie Wallace said. “They don’t understand that the true meaning of what they’re saying is globalizing killing Jews. If you go into Gaza and you say, ‘Okay, let’s have LGBTQ rights, and women’s rights, and pro-choice,’ you’d be murdered. Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, there’s one of the largest pride parades in the world.”

The 2024 parade was canceled in light of the ongoing conflict, according to the Times of Israel.

At the end of the rally, protesters took a group photo while holding their fists in the air. Groups of onlookers and police officers dispersed soon after.

“I think this is righteous,” Paul De Revere, a Jewish, anti-Zionist spectator, said. “As someone who’s been to Israel, and who likes being Jewish, I just think there’s a lot to criticize in respect for human rights.”

Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire and hostage deal on Jan. 15, set to go into effect on Jan. 19, according to a statement by President Joe Biden. Following the agreement, Israeli strikes on Gaza have killed dozens, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency. As of Jan. 17, the full Israeli cabinet approved the ceasefire.

Tallahassee SDS and other organizations are set to protest Trump’s inauguration at the Florida Capitol on Monday, Jan. 20.

“I saw a flyer and came here because I support them,” FSU archaeology major Valerie Grimaldo said. “The president isn’t supposed to be above us, he’s supposed to be on the same level as us. If the allegations thrown at him can get other people fired, I think that should apply to him.”

Yes, one of the few counties…Leon (Tallahassee - FSU, FAMU was),Gadsden (Tallahassee neighbor), Alachua (University of Florida - People’s Republic of Gainesville)…Orange (Orlando), Palm Beach and Broward. The rest of the 67 counties, including Miami-Dade for Trump.
