Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is due in Washington on Thursday to meet with President Donald Trump. She is expected to make a personal appeal for less punitive tariffs on European Union (E.U.) trade with the world’s biggest economy.
Meloni is the first trans-Atlantic leader to sit down with Trump since he announced, and then quickly suspended, 20 percent tariffs on European exports.
AFP reports Meloni — described by Trump as a “fantastic leader” who also aligns with his conservative views — has worked hard to keep communication channels open as Trump looks to rework trade with the E.U. through tariff variations.
Meloni has urged Brussels to embrace pragmatism in trade talks, calling for cool heads while casting herself as the only E.U. leader to potentially de-escalate the conflict through her personal relationship with the Republican president, AFP notes.

Italy’s a huge backdoor for Chinese made goods. Hopefully there will be some way for Trump to convince Italy to get rid of all their imported slave labor.
it’s the fastest who get paid and it’s the fastest who get laid
Remember!
Take a look at Italy’s budget and its economy.
The EU still has Italy by its short hairs.
Meloni making nice with Trump isn’t going to change that.
So does Trump!

“Had a very productive call with the President of Mexico yesterday. Likewise, I met with the highest level Japanese Trade Representatives. It was a very productive meeting.
Every Nation, including China, wants to meet! Today, Italy!”

I wonder if Elon will attend any of the meetings/festivities.
I remember reading that the virus went from Wuhan to Italy. Textiles are designed in Italy and made in Wuhan China and there are regular flights.
I find this awkward and hope that Trump and Meloni can smooth things out.
She has stated emphatically that Islam is not consistent with Italian culture. She is an animated speaker, in Italian, which I do not understand. I agree with her when her words are captioned in English. I also agree with her when I don’t understand a word she is saying. She is easy on the eyes.
Are you sure about the made in China part?
My understanding is that they have a large “guest worker” program. Where Chinese citizens live around Milan making all of those “designer” clothes. purses, bags, etc.
That many had returned to China for some holiday(maybe new years) and then brought the virus back with them to Italy.
Which was basically locked down for a year. If you lived in an apartment in Florence you could not leave to go to the grocery store. They had people to bring groceries to you and leave them outside your door.
I love her. She’s hot, smart, and conservative.
No. I’m not sure. You may be right. I just remembered reading about the Wuhan-Italian connection.
This will drive Old Media crazy, the shortest trip known to man.
Question:
Small business sob stories abound, a recent one seen locally from coffee houses who must buy coffee beans internationally, since only 1% are grown here.
I don’t patronize coffee houses, so don’t care, but I would hope there will be exceptions for businesses who can not buy American when no American sources exist.
On the other side of my point: a 10% increase shouldn’t kill anyone...coffee house or coffee drinker if it helps trade balance.
“including China”
Now that is interesting.
F your “appeal”, Giorgia: all ya’ll have to do is get rid of YOUR punitive tariffs, and the USA will drop ours ...
You noticed? ;-)
