Will Harvard Go Full Hillsdale?
American Greatness ^ | 17 Apr, 2025 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 04/17/2025 5:06:58 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Harvard risks $2.2B in federal funds as it defies anti-discrimination mandates, drawing comparisons to Hillsdale's stand-alone model of rejecting government strings.

Harvard University has rejected various demands of a presidential commission on anti-Semitism.

The task force wants to persuade Harvard to ensure Jewish students on its campus are no longer harassed, or else lose its federal funding.

Harvard retorts that it won’t be bullied by Washington.

Among its other requirements, the Trump administration also warned Harvard to cease using race as a criterion in its admissions, hiring, and promotion, contrary to law.

And it also directed the campus to ban the use of masks that, in the post-COVID era of protests, have emboldened violent demonstrators with anonymity.

The administration’s order to stop race-based bias was in accordance with civil rights statutes, and a recent Supreme Court decision specifically banning affirmative action at Harvard and elsewhere.

No matter. Harvard claimed that the Trump administration infringed upon its First Amendment rights.

So, it has temporarily rejected the administration’s orders. At least for now, Harvard has lost its annual $2.2 billion grant of federal funds.

Former President Barack Obama, among others, lauded Harvard’s rejection of the demands of the administration’s anti-Semitism task force. He claimed the Trump administration’s efforts were ham-handed.

But what academic freedom are Harvard and Obama talking about? The freedom to discriminate and segregate by race in hiring, admissions, dorms, and graduations?

The freedom of 500 Harvard students to crash the classes of others, shut down traffic, and harass students on the basis of their religion or views on Israel?

Despite all of Harvard’s platitudes, its classrooms are still being disrupted. Jewish students remain fearful.

And what would Obama say if, for example, African-American students at Harvard were harassed on campus by masked disrupters?

You would think Harvard would be horrified by the antisemitism. That they are not says something about leftism that most of us have recognized. They accuse conservatives of being what they are.

If they went PURE HILLSDALE...that would be the American Model. Everyone paying their own bills and not sapping resources from taxpayers.

Im still not sure why a university with a 50 billion dollar endowment needs any taxpayer money at all.

For blatant discrimination and antisemitism, Harvard should be suspended and Closed for a year, then to be re-opened under Federal Government supervision.

Antisemitism should not be allowed to flourish in institutions as it did in Weimar Republic. This is an extremely dangerous situation.

Prior to WWII Harvard and other Ivies had policies severely limiting the number of Jewish students they admitted. That changed after WWII when antiSemitism fell out of favor due to revulsion at the Holocaust. Since the 70s, Jew-hatred has had a resurgence on the Left, and we are seeing it’s toxic fruits among the Ivy League once again.

If Hillsdale can do it, why not Harvard?

Heck Hillsdale isn’t the only one. Grove City College also comes to mind. There are many others.

Everything in the demand letter was great. Except the part concerning “antisemitism.” That alone (removing all emotion from the argument) should terrify everyone. Antisemitism as defined by who exactly? ADL? If a student debates another stating the holocaust was over or understated is that antisemitism? I would call that free speech as protected under the first amendment. Why are we creating rules or laws for a specific group of individuals already covered under law? I thought we just fought hard to elect someone for more free speech? Everything written in that letter is already covered under law so why are we going after the university to police it? Why aren’t there arrests by the institutions directly responsible for law enforcement? If someone broke the law arrest them. The antisemitism language within the demand letter sounds as if Netanyahu wrote the letter himself. Get foreign nations out of our domestic policies. Antisemitism (as ugly as it is) is free speech period.

For decade after decade colleges (and almost every other local school on up) were more than willing to jump through the government hoops…mandates… to get at taxpayer dollars.
Question: So what’s different now?
My Answer: they’ve been infiltrated by the same America hating communists etc. who have been gifting schools our tax funds all along. Mission accomplished.
Your answer?

I hate to admit it, but prior to this I was not aware that I was funding the education of some of the wealthiest people in the nation. I’d naively thought that Harvard was truly a private university. That I, a solid member of the middle class, have been laboring for decades to support a pack of spoiled, elitist jackasses who would rather I didn’t even exist is outrageous.

There’s no way Harvard could go “Full Hillsdale”. Hillsdale is a great university because it requires great students. Harvard students are so bad that it has to give remedial arithmetic to its students who can’t even multiply and divide properly. Without reform of its entry requirements, Harvard will go the way of “Dr.” Jill’s alma matter.
