Mahdawi was arrested after arriving at a citizenship center in Vermont, The Intercept reports.
ICE’s database appears to confirm Mahdawi’s detention.
The database says Mahdawi is in ICE custody, listing his birthplace as Jordan. Mahdawi was born in the West Bank, but the ICE database does not have a category for the Palestinian territories.
Several Columbia University anti-Israel activists have been targeted by the Trump administration, starting last month with protest leader Mahmoud Khalil.

Mohsen Mahdawi’s Calls for Israel’s Destruction, Justification of Hamas Terrorism and Support for the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia University
Mohsen Mahdawi is an anti-Israel activist leader who called for Israel’s destruction and justified Hamas terrorism in late 2023. Ten years earlier, he celebrated a terrorist who had murdered dozens of Israeli Jews in 1978. Mahdawi also showed support for the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024.
Mahdawi made his late 2023 statements after a series of Hamas terror atrocities and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023. The attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”
Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.
In December 2023, Mahdawi served as co-president of DAR Palestine at Columbia University (Dar at Columbia), Columbia’s Palestinian student union, which is reportedly part of a coalition of 80 anti-Israel student groups. Columbia is located in New York, New York.
Mahdawi was also affiliated with the pro-terror activist group Within Our Lifetime (WOL) in 2023. He was reportedly a member of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) that same year.
Mahdawi is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
In December 2023, CBS reported [00:07:10] that Mahdawi “grew up in a refugee[sic] camp in the Israeli-occupied[sic] West Bank.”
As of February 20, 2024, Mahdawi, who also goes by Mohsen Khader Mahdawi, was listed in Columbia’s online directory as a student in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia’s School of General Studies.
As of March 7, 2024, Mahdawi’s LinkedIn profile said he was slated to graduate from Columbia in 2024.
As of the same date, Mahdawi’s LinkedIn also said he studied computer engineering at Birzeit University (Birzeit) from 2008 to 2014.
Birzeit University’s student body has celebrated terrorists since at least 2003. That year, student government elections featured models of exploding Israeli buses, as parties competed on the basis of which Palestinian faction had killed the most Israelis.

They have not been targeted. They outed themselves as enemies of the state.

I don’t know what Mohsen Mahdawi (the
@Columbia
student detained by ICE earlier today) was arrested for—and like anyone else, he deserves due process.
But before you turn him into a folk hero, here are a few facts:
1. Before moving to the U.S., Mohsen studied Computer Engineering at Birzeit University—a campus long tied to terrorism and anti-Western extremism.
2. In college, Mohsen wrote a poem praising Dalal Mughrabi—the terrorist who murdered 38 Israelis, including 13 children, in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. This was the worst massacre of Jews in Israel until the October 7 Massacre.
3. Expressing his anger at Israel, Mohsen once stated that “stones and Molotovs weren’t enough” to satisfy his thirst for revenge.
4. Mohsen proudly noted on social media that his cousin is a high-ranking member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
5. Despite multiple chances to do so, Mohsen refused to condemn Hamas for the October 7 massacre, calling them merely “a product of the occupation.”
6. Mohsen led pro-Hamas protests under the “By Any Means Necessary” banner—standing beside
@NerdeenKiswani
who has openly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map.”
7. In a pro-Hamas protest at in January 2024, Mohsen declared that “there is nothing more honorable than dying for a noble cause.”
8. Despite all of this, and even though he denied any allegations of rape and torture by Hamas, I invited Mohsen in December 2023 (and then again in April 2024) to help start a moderate, pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian, anti-Hamas organization on campus. He declined.
I hope justice is served in his case.
But let’s be real about who this guy is.
Hopefully he can live with Hamas.
Israel might want to have a little fun with him.
With a recognized "Hamas Leader" (high value target?)
Good news. Keep up the good work.
Sanders better dig up that video of Danny Pearl. Sanders meets all the same requirements too.
“But I'm on your side … stop, stop, aaaahhhh! gurgle gurgle gurgle.”
He wasn’t a US citizen, the article doesn’t indicate exactly what his status is but if he has some form of resident alien status, it’s still conditional. It’s conditional based on what the executive and state department’s determination as to the person’s presence in the US vs threat to national security interests. That’s certainly not the same as due process for a US citizen.
Similarly, those in the military also have free speech restrictions that prohibit speaking out against their superior officers and commanders. They enter into an agreement voluntarily with US military that limits some speech and are subject to those rules under military law.
We have to get over this false notion that mere physical presence in the US automatically accords any person full constitutional rights.
Kick this terrorism-loving jerko alien OUT! Get O u t!
I’d go after the entire faculty. But that’s just me.
No one is above the law!

He is calling for Martyrdom. Disgusting call by Islamists!
This is the next “hero” that is being defended by the American Muslim Organizations.
Send him back
