Road Trip: Fort Stewart, Georgia

Fort Stewart is named for Daniel Stewart (Brigadier General), a Revolutionary War hero and political leader from Liberty County, Georgia. It is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering 280,000 acres, which include parts of Liberty, Long, Bryan, Evans and Tattnall Counties. The reservation is about 39 miles across from east to west, and 19 miles from north to south.

It is close to the East Coast, and two deep water ports: Savannah, Georgia (42 mi), and Charleston, South Carolina (142 mi). Tank, field artillery, helicopter gunnery, and small arms ranges operate simultaneously throughout the year with little time lost to bad weather.

Seven major drop zones, multiple tank and armored fighting vehicle gunnery ranges, helicopter gunnery ranges, small arms ranges and three live-fire maneuver areas contribute to the Department of Defense's ability to train joint forces on the East coast.

Hunter Army Airfield's location in Savannah plays a critical role in the post's deployment capabilities. The largest military aircraft can land at Hunter, load the biggest equipment in the Army inventory, and then deploy both equipment and Soldiers within an 18-hour wheels-up timeline to contingency operations anywhere in the world.

Stewart-Hunter is an Army Community of Excellence earning the Chief of Staff's top award 7 times from 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2019 for being the best place to live, train, work, and raise a family. The installation earned the Bronze award in 2018.

Just got through with cleanup today, event was a big success, feeling like I’ve been smacked with a baseball bat. A couple days of rest needed for sure!

Yay for a big success! Now you can catch your breath. I know that feeling of being smacked with a baseball bat from my time with a car club. Putting on our annual car show was a real butt-kicker but it was fun and we raised a lot of $$$ for local charities.

Enjoy kicking back a bit, knowing your efforts were very worthwhile!

It’s really nice to finally have pleasant weather again and see everything come back to life, isn’t it?
We’re still on a bit of a roller coaster ride temp-wise. 84 today and tomorrow is only supposed to be in the mid 50s. Then warm up again Wednesday. At least the freezes are over with!
