The teenager charged with murdering high school football star Austin Metcalf at a Texas track meet will not face the death penalty if he’s convicted at trial, according to the local District Attorney.
Karmelo Anthony, 17, who allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the heart at the Frisco athletic event last week, is protected from death row — and even life without parole — by the Supreme Court due to his age, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis told WFAA.
“The Supreme Court has said not only can you not seek the death penalty against someone who committed a crime when they’re 17, you can’t even get them life without parole. That would not be something we could do even if we wanted to,” Willis said.

WTF is this “allegedly stabbed” BS?
Right. Why would he? Makes sense. Took a life for no reason. He should be able to live out his years to their fullest.
Of course not. Who would suggest such a thing?
Was kicked out of school for bringing a knife. Went to his car to get the weapon and stabbed the young man in the heart.
Open season on whites. No riots. Barely any TV media coverage. Nobody cares.
But $400,000+ donated to the killer for his family to ‘move somewhere safe’.
He can’t get death penalty because he 17.
He can get life without parole.
OK. it lets everyone know that he has to make it through the trial without citizen retribution.
My sincerest condolences to Austin Metcalf’s family. This must be absolutely devastating for them.
This has be gone over it’s not up to the DA or the Texas AG or the governor of Texas himself. The U.S. Supreme Court’s already ruled you cannot execute anyone in any state under 18 , you also cannot give them a life sentence without parole for anyone under 18.
Roper v. Simmons 2004 end of discussion.Texas would love to needle murderers at 17 we simply cannot.
No read Roper v. Simmons 2004
Max he can get us 99 years with half time served. Life without parole is also off the table for under 18
The killer asked, sorry, aksed the same question.
Yeah, a constitutional amendment is required to remedy this ruling.
Little things that have dripped out about this story.
It took place during a rain delay.
His knife was in his bag.
There is video of the confrontation that has not yet been released.
The killer was a straight A student, but had been cut from the team because of a low GPA.
Drip...drip...drip...
He will be real popular in gen/pop!
Sigh the media should properly say the confessed killer since he confessed in his own words in body camera no less. You can read the arrest report it’s in there.
Sadly Texas cannot end this guy Roper v. Simmons limits what we can do. I am a citizen , reasonable person, in good standing with my community of Collin County I would LOVE to be on this jury. As a former LEO the defense would never allow it.
You are saying Karmelo Anthony is a straight A student, but he was kicked off the team, because they require a GPA above 4.0? If he was kicked off the team, why was her there?
It’s going to get worse. He is going to be trashed in the media.
Death penalty or life without parole? At the rate it’s been going Anthony will be exonerated, and Metcalf’s family will owe him millions?
What were they trying to get for Kyle Riddington? Seems like that could be a guideline.
Minors cannot get the death penalty in the US
