IRS Tax Deadline Extended in 9 States: Here's Why
Newsweek ^ | Apr 14, 2025 | Giulia Carbonaro

Posted on 04/14/2025 7:44:08 AM PDT by where's_the_Outrage?

While Tax Day looms over millions of Americans, taxpayers in at least nine states have been allowed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to file their individual income tax returns for tax year 2024 a little later, ditching the April 15 deadline.....

But the latest data shared by the IRS show that the agency had received nearly 1 million fewer returns by the end of March than it had during that same period last year—possibly because of uncertainty surrounding the IRS and its work, and the direction the U.S. economy is headed toward.

Normally, taxpayers who are unable to meet the April 15 deadline can request an extension and, if they receive approval, they have until October 15 to file without penalties. They still have to make any payment owed by April 15.

But taxpayers in several states this year have received an automatic extension on their April 15 tax deadline which gives them until Thursday, May 1 to file their tax returns and make any tax payments due for tax year 2024. Others have until fall to file their returns......

The list of taxpayers qualifying for the May 1 deadline includes:

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina: all taxpayers;

Alaska: taxpayers in the City and Borough of Juneau;

New Mexico: taxpayers in Chaves County;

Tennessee: taxpayers in Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties;

Virginia: taxpayers in Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland and Botetourt counties; Bristol City; Buchanan, Buckingham, Carroll and Charlotte counties; Covington City; Craig County; Danville City; Dickenson and Floyd counties; Galax City; Giles, Grayson, Greene, Lee, Madison, Montgomery and Nelson counties; Norton City; Patrick, Pittsylvania and Pulaski counties; Radford City; Roanoke City; Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties.

If Whitmer wasn’t so busy trying to get face time (or not), upper Michigan would be receiving tax extensions after the horrific ice storm. There are still around 10,0000 people without power. Some people just got power back a few days ago. They were initially told a month.

The deadline for state and federal taxes for those of us living in Los Angeles County was extended to October 15th b/c of the wildfires.

I’m holding off until October b/c the $$ is in an interest bearing account.

As my Dad used to say: Better in my pocket than the government’s.

For many reasons that FReepers are familiar with, Whitmer is in the top five of Democrats that I despise and hate. A feminazi cabal of witches controls that state, with a female AG too.

Wasn’t a lot of these short extensions due to weather-related events from 2024?

While the article suggests the extension is automatic, there may be some significant nuances to that.

For example, note this from the Alabama Department of Revenue: "Some Alabamians may have until May 1 to file both state and federal taxes, according to a release from the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR).

"The state is offering tax filing and penalty relief, on a case-by-case basis, to taxpayers who reside or have a business in federally declared disaster areas who may be unable to file timely tax returns as a result of damage or disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, according to its website."

“1) taxes are still due april 15”

Not if you are 8n the selected states where it is due May 1.

“2) who decides on the date of tax return due?”

IRS

“why some states and not all?”

Mother Nature

This was the last year for the NH interest and dividends tax(2024).
I wrote out my check to State of NH this morning.

I overpaid my FICA taxes. So I will be getting money back that I loaned Uncle Sugar INTEREST FREE!

“possibly because of uncertainty surrounding the IRS and its work, and the direction the U.S. economy is headed toward”

riiiight ... FUTURE POSSIBLE events MIGHT POSSIBLY cause folks to delay in filing LAST YEAR’S taxes because, uh, just because ...

apparently, “global warming/climate change” is no longer the cause of everything that’s slightly diffent than a few days ago; now “the direction the economy MIGHT be headed towards” is another all purpose lie by the Democrat propaganda media ...

Here in Florida, our local MSM has been lying to everyone. They blab in the Tampa market about today being the last day.

Seems like more of a push to benefit tax preparers, than honesty to the viewers.

If my wife and I are still owed covid checks from two or three years ago, we hear this is the last chance to file.
Some $$$ got put in my SS direct deposit, but not my wifes. Is it worth the stress of dealing with?

Consider that “somebody” already stole your money.

If more than 20.00/hour spent sending in the paperwork, SEND IT. FILE THE APPEAL.
