Climate protest jail term deemed 'disproportionate'

A human rights expert has described the year-long sentence given to a climate change activist as "blatantly disproportionate".

Dr Patrick Hart caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to fuel pumps during a Just Stop Oil demonstration in August 2022 and said he had done so because he believed the world was in a "truly dark and unprecedented time".

Dr Hart, 38, was jailed in January after causing damage to 16 fuel pumps at Thurrock Motorway Services, in Grays, Essex.

The Bristol-based GP hit the pumps with a hammer, sprayed them with orange paint and obstructed lorries refuelling the station. He was sentenced to 12 months for criminal damage.

The cost of repairing the pumps was £9,376 and the action closed the pumps for a day while repairs were carried out.

Dr Hart said he believed his actions had been justified as the primary duty of a doctor was to "act in the best interests of our patients".

"I just came to appreciate the climate crisis is the greatest risk to all our health and anything else I can be doing is meaningless and the most meaningful thing I can do is to try to defeat that," he said.

"It's very odd to me that damaging inanimate objects is considered no longer peaceful.

disagreement with others over a deeply held belief is admirable when conducted in a peaceful manner. destruction of property that doesn’t belong to you to make a point...not so much.

The “peaceful protests” cost the US billions in 2020, and resulted in many deaths.

Damaging someone else’s property is not peaceful.

Property is required to live. Damaging property is attacking live itself.

This mentally unbalanced man is a member of a cult that thinks the world is being destroyed by other people.

The cult needs to be attacked. It is a mind virus which is a threat to humanity.

I’m of the belief that these eco-terrorists should get free wheelchairs for life and no jailtime. After their knee joints get smashed of course and never will be able to walk again, it is outpatient and no blood to speak of.

Okay then. Let’s start with the inanimate objects in this idiot’s house. Give me an hour and then we will ask him how he feels about it.

Agreed. He should have got 5 years instead of one, with no chance of parole.

His act was premeditated, and very disruptive to society, causing damage well beyond the damage to the gas pumps.

He should have been made an example of.

There are many videos on youtube of these Maoists blocking motorways (Britain's equivalent of our Interstates). Many of them are really great...they show the driver slowly going forward with a Maoist clinging to the hood. On one or two that I've seen it was an 18 wheeler going slowly forward.

There's also a video from Nevada where a bunch of Maoists blocked off a road causing a backup of miles. The problem was they did it on an Indian reservation. You see the reservation's police cars smash through the blockade with one of the Maoists landing on the hood of the police car. Priceless!

Is he one of the first to suffer under Starmer’s disproportionate sentencing for whites?

Just and appropriate punishments are usually “disproportionate”.

If someone steals $100 and is caught, he doesn’t just pay the $100 and walk away.

Punishment needs to be severe enough to be a deterrent to other would-be criminals.
