Lawmakers call for ban on NYC tourist helicopters after Hudson River chopper crash kills six
New York Post ^ | April 11, 2025 | Nika Shakhnazarova

New York state Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal has called for a ban on sightseeing helicopter tours in New York City — sensationally saying Thursday’s tragic crash in the Hudson River narrowly avoided disaster had the chopper crashed into a densely-populated area.

Including this week’s harrowing tragedy, a total of 25 people have died in the Big Apple during sightseeing helicopter tours in the last 40 years.

Now, Hoylman-Sigal (D-Manhattan) expressed a strong desire to limit traffic over the city to just first responders and press — and said NYC should ditch sightseeing chopper tours.

“There’s no reason to allow tourists and tour flight operators to use our valuable precious airspace,” he told ABC 7 New York.

The state legislator added that there’s too little safety regulations in place for such tours taking place daily.

“The danger is that FAA regulates airspace above 500 feet, so the city and state are prohibited from passing laws that make tourist choppers safer,” he added.

On Thursday, a Spanish family-of-five and an unidentified pilot tragically died after the the Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter they were on plummeted into the Hudson River.

What about oligarchs and politicians? I assume they can still use NYC's "precious air space."

I’ll bet they won’t ban city officials from using helicopters

This is about noise, not safety.

I want a law passed banning leftist filth from everywhere, especially from politics, academia and the Arts.

Legislative overreach - just need a ban on sightseeing helicopter tours ending in a crash in New York City

The dems are in banning mode........but the chopper that crashed had lost its entire rotor assembly and its tail rotor entire.....video shows it had been transformed into plummeting gondola from 1100 feet above the Hudson.

Bad maintenance on that chopper......maybe a few too many unqualified DEI hires?

The aviation industry is beset by a cultural malaise, and the Dem answer is to ban choppers rather than address their proven ideological foolery of promoting techs based on race and gender , rather than on the basis of expertise and high work ethics.

Sean Duffy has his work cut out ......

Those Bell 206L-4 Long Rangers aren’t cheap pieces of shit; there must have been something seriously wrong with it.

But to stop all helicopter tourism in and around NYC to grab a headline is ridiculous. Next thing you know they’ll be banning them over the Grand Canyon................................................................................................

Because shut up, that’s why, he said. A lot of NYC businessmen used to fly into the city everyday in those boat planes before WWII, they could live outside the city and commute by air. Gasoline rationing put an end to that.

Progressives will eventually get around to:
Brushing teeth causes cavites. "Something must be done about it!" New York Times: "Ban Toothbrushes! (anywhere near the Hudson)"

This doesn’t go far enough. We should ban air travel entirely from the NYC metro area. We should also ban passenger rail; once Joe Biden passes, we won’t need the Acela any longer, and derailments can kill people. Automobile travel? Surely you jest.

Heck, we should probably turn NYC back into a wilderness. Let the people return peacefully to their countries of origin. It’s in a storm-vulnerable coastal zone that’s going to be flooded out anyhow by rising sea levels pretty soon.

Like very poor maintenance or sabotage.

In today’s leftist environment, it could be either or both.

I heard speculation the pilot was doing tricks for the children and the main rotor hit the tail rotor........

From the article. No mention of the fact it was a Siemens big shot from Spain, not your normal everyday tourist.

Agree, and it’s easy to do so. Due to the potential of significant loss of life, just pass a law prohibiting DEI in regard to helicopter operations (ground crews, maintenance, of course piloting, etc.) and you’ve effectively banned crashes.
