Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said during Thursday’s Cabinet meeting that countries are approaching the United States with offers they never previously would have because of President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.
Lutnick was the second cabinet member to speak after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth just a day after Trump put a pause on his reciprocal tariffs on countries that did not retaliate against them. According to the White House, some 75 countries are looking to negotiate, while escalations with Beijing have led to the administration ramping up reciprocal tariffs to 125 percent on China.
“They have come with offers that they never, ever, ever would have come with but for the moves that the president has made, demanding that people treat the United States with respect,” Lutnick said.
“We’re getting the respect we deserve now, and I think you’re going to see historic deals one after another,” he added.
Lutnick’s statement echoes Trump’s comments Monday while speaking with reporters alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office.

Do not be a panican. Trump has all the trump cards. We have trade deficits which gives us the advantage.
Well, how about acceptinga few of the offers just to show that the process is working?
It will work out to our advantage. The mere fact that 75 countries are waiting in line to negotiate their tariffs imposed on America, with Trump ready to impose tariffs on them, they have no options other that lower their tariffs or cancel them like Israel already has.
Yes, there is bound to be some upheaval in the stock and bonds markets, but you will see as Trump daily negotiates better trade deals, it will all settle down and America will be in a fairer trade position. I'm willing to bet that even Chaina comes around to a better trade position.
The thing the hysterics keep forgetting is that the World needs American consumers more than we need their crappy little products. Also, watch as manufacturing comes back to our shores. It will take some time, but this is the exact course presidents past should have taken.
I think that is exactly why he did the "pause". We will see in the coming weeks a number of countries dropping their punitive tariffs on USA products. Those that don't, will still face the Trump tariffs. I think it's ballsy and genius what the Orange Bad Man has done. He's not screwing around this time. I'm betting if Bondi or Patel don't file charges within the next 6 months, they will be history.
Me, too. I try to listen to Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank. He’s a Canadian...and gives some nice insights. He agrees....China has been sc****** the US for years.
Well, once again the NeverTrumper Anit-Tariff trolls on FreeRepublic have been proven wrong.
Who would’ve thought!
amen
He’s defending his relatively hardline approach that Trump started out with but backed away from.
Why wouldn’t it work out?
Considering we’re arming most of these countries at our expense, I’d say yes, there’s a lot of room to negotiate.
These guys boast a lot. One thing I don’t like about them. Too much talk.
President Trump is making an example of China.
