Trump Administration Freezes More Than $1 Billion in Funding for Cornell
Cornell Daily Sun ^ | Apr 8, 2025 | Matthew Kiviat

Posted on 04/08/2025 8:42:45 PM PDT by Hieronymus

The federal government has frozen over $1 billion in funding for Cornell, according to members of the Trump administration. This comes amid an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.

The move follows the slashing of more than $3.3 billion in federal funding from several Ivy League universities, including Columbia, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown and Princeton. The Trump administration also froze $790 million in funding for Northwestern, according to The New York Times.

... A Monday evening statement from Cornell administrators explained that the University was “aware of media reports suggesting that more than $1 billion in federal grants have been frozen” but had “not received information that would confirm this figure.”

An interesting article from the Daily Sun—Do you still run Ithaca is Evil? They had an article denouncing the new President as a Trump man that I may take time to post on Thursday.

They really should be in charge of funding themselves.

Making them “Ivey” should be funded by their “graduates”.

Cornell’s endowment is $10.6 billion. Why in the hell are we US Taxpayers giving Cornell a billion dollars in the first place? Congress is a den of thieves.

Why the hell are billions of dollars, some part of which are my hard-earned dollars, being given to these universities? Heck no, stop it now! Get the money back, we’re deeply in debt as a nation.

Ithaca is not the city of evil.
It’s a depressing miserable little hamlet.
There is a reason people throw themselves in the gorges.

Various government agencies give universities money to do “research” which the agency finds to be of value to the country. R&D is a useful investment of public funds, but these arrogant institutions have mad a laugh stock of science and research. They use the money for whatever nefarious purpose suits them. Meanwhile, the scientific enterprise is sinking under the weight of fakery and fraud.

Yale and Dartmouth? (I think Yale is worse than Harvard but better than Princeton—no idea about Dartmouth).

Cornell does have far more undergraduates than any of the others, so on a per-student basis they are worse off—still a lot of money. Harvard has recently taken steps to make the education completely covered, IIRC correctly, from families making under $100K, and tuition covered for those making under $200k. I doubt Cornell could do the same, at least not on a long-term sustainable basis.

“$10.7 billion
As of 2024, the university’s endowment stands at $10.7 billion, making it the 14th-largest among U.S. universities. In 2018, Cornell raised $743 million in private donations, ranking third behind Harvard University and Stanford University.”

14th is impressive, but Cornell’s enrollment is 150% higher than Harvard—adjusting for size makes some endowments even more impressive, and others less.

Having five times the endowment with 40% of the students makes Harvard well over ten times better off than Cornell.

This makes the position of the Administration and Board, as perceived by a Cornell columnist more understandable (not that I expect any school or state to stand long—but it looks like Cornell has baked in the cave).
