SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — A bill that would ban “black market” restaurant reservations in Illinois has passed out of the House.
HB2456, or the Restaurant Reservation Anti-Piracy Act, would prevent third party services from listing, advertising, promoting, or selling restaurant reservations without a written agreement.
“At a time when local restaurants are operating with extremely tight margins and working to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, they shouldn’t have to deal with third-party services snatching up their reservations and selling them at a premium, which leads to no-shows and confusion that only hurts their bottom lines,” said State Representative Margaret Croke, who introduced the bill.

Who even thought up the idea of a black market restaurant reservation?
Perhaps the restaurant should take a $50.00 credit card fee in advance when anyone makes a reservation.

I’ve never heard of third party reservation systems that the restaurant didn’t sign up for.

Restaurants should just stop taking reservations to dismantle the third party criminal activity, unless someone at those different restaurants are in on it, and getting a kickback.

Maybe some 3rd party makes a reservation, then sells that time slot to someone else.

Apparently, nefarious individuals make reservations en masse at popular restaurants, then resell what they can for a premium and then let the remainder go. This leaves the restaurant with empty tables.

Black market reservation
Isn’t that a double racist statement? Next folks will be asking the Chinese mailman where the nearest Chinese restaurant is.

Restaurants should just stop taking reservations to dismantle the third party criminal activity, unless someone at those different restaurants are in on it, and getting a kickback. I live in a different world. If I try to make a restaurant reservation and there are no openings, I would try another venue rather than paying a 3rd party for reservations. That said, money talks and well known tipping customers aren't going to have a problem getting a reservations.
