Roughly a month after taking Sudja, Russian Forces drive Ukrainian defenders out of Guevo. Now only Olezhnia and Gornal stand in the way of a complete expulsion of Kiev forces from Kursk region.

There’s no denying that the Ukrainian operation in Russia’s Kursk region was a successful adventure from the standpoint of a PR stunt.

There’s also unanimous agreement that the Kiev regime burned a disproportionate amount of resources to hold the sliver of terrain for 9 months – be it tanks and armored cars, be it artillery and air defense units, be it tens of thousands of troops, maybe as many as 75,000.

One month after retaking Sudja, today the Russians liberated Guevo. Now, only Olezhnia and Gornal stand in the way of a complete expulsion of Ukrainian forces from Kursk region.

Reuters reported:

“Russia is close to regaining full control of its western Kursk region after pushing Ukrainian forces from one of their last footholds there, the regional governor and state media said on Tuesday.

Russia’s Defense Ministry released video of what it said was the recapture of the settlement of [Guevo] set to dramatic music, showing smoke rising into the air from various buildings, a soldier waving the Russian flag from the window of a heavily damaged Orthodox church, and Russian troops carrying out house-to-house checks in case any Ukrainian soldiers were hiding.”

“Russia has retaken a swath of territory inside Kursk in recent weeks, pushing Ukrainian forces closer towards the border. It has also begun to take territory in Ukraine’s neighboring Sumy region after Putin spoke of the possibility of carving out a buffer zone.

Alexander Khinshtein, the governor of Kursk who was appointed by Putin in December, said the raising of Russia’s flag in Guyevo meant Russian forces were on course to regain control of the region ‘very soon’.”

Now the Russians will have to prudently take land to make a very deep “buffer zone” to have defense in depth against future Ukrainian invasions.

"Now the Russians will have to prudently take land to make a very deep “buffer zone” to have defense in depth against future Ukrainian invasions."

Russian advances in Ukraine have amounted to:

  1. ~170 square miles per month Fall 2024
  2. 125 square miles in January 2025
  3. 75 square miles in February 2025
  4. 55 square miles in March 2025
According to Ukraine, the cost to Russian forces for these advances average: Russians claim to have annexed five Ukrainian oblasts -- Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia & Kherson.
In those five oblasts, Russians occupy around 41,000 square miles, but have not taken another 11,000 square miles.

Ukraine's total internationally recognized territory is roughly 233,000 square miles.
