'Blunt political reality': Republican leadership won't be ditching Trump anytime soon | Opinion (beyond barf)

Many economists, from former New York Times columnist Paul Krugman to the University of Michigan's Justin Wolfers, are warning that President Donald Trump's steep new tariffs will cause a wide range of imported goods — from food to computers to building materials — to become much more expensive. And according to Krugman, tariffs may be one of the Trump policies that pushes the United States into a recession.

Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), are scathing critics of Trump's tariffs. And some GOP lawmakers are anti-tariffs as well, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky).

But in an article published by Politico on April 4, reporters Jordain Carney and Meredith Lee Hill note that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) are reluctant to criticize Trump's tariffs — even with a sharp downturn on Wall Street.

"Many Republican lawmakers are privately anxious about President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs," Carney and Hill explain. "A handful of them have even expressed their alarm publicly. Their top leaders, however, are holding the line. Two days into Trump's stunning trade war, Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are showing no sign they will pressure the (Trump) Administration to change course despite a 10 percent drop in the stock market and stark warnings from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell."

From what I see Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do, and I support that.

Winning!!!!

So they mean Pence, Kasich and Liz Cheney could be the moderates to have broad appeal to the electorate? Including Bill Kristol? /S

Now that’s a major barf inducer.

After Reagan we spent all those years with moderates making sure not to improve anything drastically so as not to make the Deep State nervous. Let alone upset McConnell.

That’s over.

If they tried to ditch Trump like the Dems want, the Republicans would disappear into the winds of history like the Whigs did when they tried to straddle the fence on slavery.

Thanks for your concern Krugman.

However, with President Trump as our President, I will happily live on oat porridge if need be.
And I will ride Shank's mare when need be. And I will read Zane Gray novels from the free
library. After the pain of Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden, there is nothing I can't endure.

Stocks are down ONLY 2.5% from level 12 months ago. Hardly a sharp drop in an over-valued market.

What makes elected officials uncomfortable (not just Republican ones) is that they are leery of risk. Especially the lawyers: they want everything drawn within the lines.

What President Trump is doing is risky. We can't accurately predict the outcome. It's a game of poker: you don't play the hand, you play the person across the table from you. What many of the fearful are saying is that Trump is actually playing a game of "chicken", crying out that it's not a calculated risk, it's a Hail Mary play.

The risk adverse are in full cry.

In Nevada, the mantra is "if you don't bet, you can't win." Remember the story of Federal Express and the roulette table? THAT was a Hail Mary play. What Trump is doing with tariffs is applying leverage, a game well known to the Wall Street crowd, as well as self-made people.

A good poker player knows all the odds of all the plays. Ditto the blackjack and baccarat player. Is Trump that kind of player? I'm betting that he is, and why I voted for him in 2024. Made my bet knowing that it could be a losing one. Or, a winning one.

When Biden was elected in 2020, I took steps to protect myself. It turns out those steps also protected me from the yellow-bellied stock traders: the hit caused by the tariff play on my portfolio was less than three percent. My belief is that I'm more at risk from the banks, the commercial real estate financing debacle, and the Federal Reserve actions.
