Brace yourself: Trump’s trade war is about to make Americans poorer
The Hill ^ | 4/4/26 | Will Marshall, opinion contributor

Move over, Smoot and Hawley. President Trump has anointed himself America’s greatest protectionist, and he’s launching a global trade war to prove it.

On Wednesday, Trump slapped a minimum 10 percent tariff on all imports, plus additional “reciprocal” tariffs on 60 other countries that have the temerity to sell us things we want to buy. He dubbed it “Liberation Day” to mark the freeing of Americans from the supposedly oppressive burden of trading with others.

Tariffs are a huge deglobalization move, especially by the world’s largest economy. Every country for itself.

I’m braced for short term pain and it’s worth every cent to not see Kamala and Tim in office. Can you imagine waking up every morning and seeing them on the news?

One question comes to mind. Why hasn't putting tariffs on American products made other countries poorer?

And here's another.

Trump’s tariffs are a quack remedy for a real socioeconomic problem: The disappearance of manufacturing jobs with good pay and benefits since the 1970s has hit working families hard, even as the country as a whole has prospered.

If the country as a whole has prospered, then why do we have a 4 trillion dollar deficit? What would have happened if we didn't raise the debt ceiling last year just to pay the interest on all of the money we borrowed?

They always want us behind the 8 ball and be the world’s dumping ground and piggy bank. We need to bring all manufacturing home and let the rest of the world use their slave labor goods. We can afford to pay a bit more.

Aww . . . where was Will Marshall back in 1996 when Pelosi was talking exactly the same way as Trump is now, with respect to Red China?

Just another doomsayer. This is NOT “Smoot-Hawley” strategy, not even kinda sorta.

Trump is just negotiating on a grand scale, getting OTHER nations to recognize that tariffs have consequences, not only for the rest of the world, but for their own purposes as well.

This is supposed to damage ONLY the US and nobody else? Guess again, Trump promises to apply the tariffs, then almost immediately, he gives the affected national entities an option as to how to AVOID the tariffs.

Because this is going to drive up prices. Subsidized corn from foreign countries will be more expensive now.

The article is correct though. Prices on most things are going up. Maybe significantly in the short term.

While I support this, I also realize it will most likely end up be very unpopular. Joe and Jane six pack will get hurt when all the stuff at Walmart jumps 30-50%.

So stop "wanting to buy" throw away junk! Buying $50 microwaves from Walmart has hurt us way more than these tariffs will. Do a little research. Before we had an income tax, this country used to pay its bills with tariffs.

The United States doesn't even make shoes. Televisions. Most pharmaceutical prescription drugs. Bedding sheets and towels. Tin plating of metals. Heat treating of specialty metals.

The politicians from 1975 to date, that sold you on the idea this is a good thing, need to be strung up. A car can't be built here or anywhere, without a car seat that was built in Mexico. Really.

I hope wheat follows it. It would be nice if our family farm in OK actually made a little more money than the pocket change it currently makes.
