It’s the most concrete effort yet to turn President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire the Danish territory into actionable policy, despite widespread international outrage.
The White House is preparing an estimate of what it would cost the federal government to control Greenland as a territory, according to three people with knowledge of the matter, the most concrete effort yet to turn President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire the Danish island into actionable policy.
While Trump’s demands elicited international outrage and a rebuke from Denmark, White House officials have in recent weeks taken steps to determine the financial ramifications of Greenland becoming a U.S. territory, including the cost of providing government services for its 58,000 residents, the people said.
At the White House budget office, staff have sought to understand the potential cost to maintain Greenland if it were acquired, two of the people said. They are also attempting to estimate what revenue to the U.S. Treasury could be gained from Greenland’s natural resources.
One option under analysis is to offer a sweeter deal to the government of Greenland than the Danes, who currently subsidize services on the island at a rate of about $600 million every year.
“This is a lot higher than that,” said one official familiar with the plans, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss plans that remain in the works. “The point is, ‘We’ll pay you more than Denmark does.’”
Trump has said repeatedly that the United States will “get” Greenland.
“100 percent,” he told NBC News on Saturday. Asked whether it would involve force, he said that there is a “good possibility that we could do it without military force” but that “I don’t take anything off the table.”
The internal planning suggests that the administration’s ambitions to acquire Greenland go beyond...

The Art of the Deal, baby. Everyone has their price.
Hell, Trump could cut one-time $1 million checks to every resident of Greenland, and it’d cost $58 billion... and that’d be less than 7% of the annual defense budget.
. . . the U.S.!
No, they really don't. People like to make that assumption about other people, while knowing there are a lot of things they personally would never do for money.
International outrage?
Fair enough, but no one is asking the Greenlanders to commit murder or sell their daughters to a brothel. We’re just talking about swapping out one landlord (Denmark) for another (USA). Most folks have their price when it comes to something like that.
Really, baby?
How much would Israel accept for Jerusalem? If you're Jewish, I think you'd be outraged at the thought of selling Jerusalem for any price.
How much do you think Saudi Arabia would accept for Mecca? However little you think of Muslims, I assure you they would not part with Mecca for any price.
What price would China place on Hong Kong? The answer is, not for sale at any price. Re-uniting with Hong Kong was a matter of priceless national pride.
Would you sell Alaska to Putin at any price? No true American would.
There's no "art of the deal" here. Sovereignty is a matter of national, sometimes even religious, pride. People pay with their lives for sovereignty over their homeland. And you think you can measure that in dollars?
lol. It’s Greenland and Denmark. If trump can make a deal then that’s all good but I’m not gonna pretend its an impressive achievement.
In reality, Trump has two years if he wants to make a move on Greenland.

I am a strong Trump supporter but I really wish he would stop this Greenland lunacy. Threats to “aquire” it make us look no better than Russia with Ukraine or China with Taiwan. We’ve made deals with countries all around the world to obtain natural resources or to put military bases in their countries for mutual security. We used to have a huge military base in Greenland during the Cold War which we greatly reduced after the end of the Soviet Union. I’m sure the great negotiator could rebuild it without threats to take over the whole freaking place.
Agree. This could have been handled differently.
This Greenland thing is an unnecessary distraction. What would our reaction be if Spain was saying they’re going to take Puerto Rico? Sometimes quiet diplomacy is need to hammer out treaties rather than midnight texts. Same thing with dropping the third term stuff the other day. There’s much to be done without these unproductive side trips.
Perhaps. But consider that Trump’s messaging is at least partially directed towards China and Russia. This is the sort of language they understand. Trump wants to let them know that he has no intention of letting them make inroads into our sphere of influence. Hinting that force may be used to acquire Greenland, while understandably disconcerting, sends a message to both China and Russia.
Lets face it Denmark cant even protect itself, does anyone think if china steps in to a soft takeover of Greenland the Danes will be able to stop them.? If anything the danish government will be bought out by the CCP for access. Reason why we need to check mate this now. Cant trust the Danes and we know we cant trust china
Good point.
Whatever people’s price for whatever, being gracious, respectful and private can help with a lot of things.
