The battle over transgender athletes’ participation in youth sports came to California on Tuesday as state lawmakers rejected two bills aimed at keeping trans kids and teens off sports teams consistent with their gender identity.

Lawmakers voted to block a bill that would have required the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school sports, to adopt rules banning students whose sex was assigned male at birth from participating on a girls school sports team.

I despise the term “assigned at birth” in an article, because it pretends that the child comes out of the womb as a hermaphrodite creature and the attending physician must make a casual determination of sex using some undefined set of factors. The determination made is only preliminary, and as a social construct, is subject to refinement into a variety of genders.
