GOP senators line up with Democrats to oppose Trump’s Canada tariffs

Republicans could be poised to deal a symbolic blow to President Donald Trump’s trade policy, with several GOP senators indicating they planned to join Democrats in a Tuesday vote to block blanket tariffs on Canada.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Monday that she plans to back the resolution led by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) that would terminate the national emergency Trump declared last month, citing fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration. Trump has used that declaration to justify 25 percent across-the-board tariffs on America’s northern neighbor and leading trade partner — duties that Trump has threatened to start levying later this week.

“Imposing tariffs on Canada, which is our closest neighbor, [a] friendly ally, is a huge mistake and will cause disruption in the economies of both countries,” Collins told reporters while wearing a Canadian flag pin alongside a U.S. flag pin on her lapel. She warned of potential fallout, including job losses for her state’s key industries, including lobstering and wood pulp, as well as potato and blueberry production.

Collins is poised to join GOP Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who is a co-sponsor of Kaine’s resolution and a strong opponent of tariffs and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who has also expressed concerns about Trump’s tariff plans for North American neighbors. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa — one of many farm-state Republicans who has raised particular concerns about the Canadian tariffs — also said he was undecided on the Kaine resolution.

Rand is a damned MORON, a lousy RINO and so are his father and their supporters!

Those against tariffs are financial imbeciles, neither know nor understand American tariff history, not history of ANY kind!

That is because they are too ignorant to comprehend what Trump is trying to do for the US by using the tariffs in the first place. Yea, let’s just let other Countries keep taking advantage of the people in the US...

I don’t see anything wrong with iour “allies” charging tariffs which preclude our businesses and farmers from accessing their markets, while sending their products to America, tariff free to undercut the ability of American businesses to compete in our own markets. “Free trade,” according to Rand Paul. This is a test, can Trump separate our globalist republicans from their corporate donors.

How dumb is this?! At this moment in time prior to 2 Apr, Collins is okay to send Maine lobsters to Canada for processing then pay a huge tariff importing that same lobster back to the state it originated in. She sides with Canada instead of her own country. Why am I not surprised?

I woulnd’t call Rand one of the usual suspects but if he unites with the likes of Collins hey can win votes

Grassley may also vote against it

Doesn’t seem a popular policy.

Once again, Trump proves an important point: he is locked in a political struggle with the Uniparty.

Well certainly some people like Paul have always been ideological on issues like these. I understand that these are for main street, not wall street.

A negative balance of trade with BOTH Canada ($63 billion) and Mexico ($181 billion). They’ve both been freeloading for decades driven by asymmetrical tariffs. It’s about time somebody had the cojones to put a stop to it.

Okay, ask yourself WHY that is!

Stupid turncoated morons, who neither understand the topic at all AND don't believe in bringing America back to greatness, siding with far lefties to bring down Trump; especially over THIS, are TRAITORS!

Just about every single nation had placed tariffs on OUR exported goods since at least the end of WW II and many did so prior to that!

OTOH...we stopped almost ALL tariffs, on imported products since during Wilson's disgraceful presidency!

WHY IS THAT THE WAY TO KEEP THINGS?

Just announcing the new tariffs has now brought MANY FOREIGN COMPANIES TO NOW BRING THEIR MANUFACTURING HERE!

I challenge YOU to tell the rest of us just WHY and HOW that is a "bad" thing!
