Why Trump wants to ban barcodes on ballots — and why it's an urgent threat

Having a text printout that you can "check" means absolutely nothing.

Where I live, we used to be able to vote entirely on a computer screen, but it would give you a printout if you wanted one. I tried to explain to the people who worked there that what is printed on that paper could be entirely different from the votes sent to the county for counting. I believe they thought I was a nut.

Votebeat is a Leftist, anti-Trump organization.
When Votebeat says banning bar and QR codes on ballots is an “urgent threat”, the question is, “threat to what?” Would that threat be to Leftist/Dem voting fraud?

IMHO, the key ingredients for vote counting fraud are:
1) Unnecessary complexity; and 2) Large voting/counting precincts. Ban all absentee, drop-box, mail and online voting, except for the truly handicapped or ill, with doctor’s written statement. Stick to simple paper ballots that are scanned at the voting place. Keep the precinct size below 1000. Have officials from all parties witness the count and certification at the precinct. Post the statewide (or county, city, etc. for local-only contests) results online for all precincts. The precinct officials can monitor whether their numbers have been altered. Other than corrupt conspiracies at the precinct level, this would kill the counting fraud and get the results the same day as the election.

"broad powers for the executive branch that go far beyond what’s prescribed in the Constitution or sanctioned by courts."

I doubt that response applies when national offices are on the ballot.

Right now, many states (mainly those that rely on mail ballots) associate the BALLOT to the voter. That's how the many states can provide a "Where's my ballot" system that allows you to track your ballot. The ballot tracking ID is on the envelope you use to return your ballot. Once the ballot is opened and the envelope discarded, that association is broken.

To my knowledge, no state uses serial numbers to prove authenticity of the actual ballot. Doing so would require a unique number or code on each ballot which would then be easy to associate the ballot to the voter and voter anonymity would be lost.

So, without unique ballot IDs, it is "easy" to generate fraudulent ballots and insert them into the system at multiple points.

Mail-in voting should be banned right from the start. The only exceptions should be military people currently deployed overseas and the infirm. It should never be done as a convenience.

We need barcodes, or serial numbers, or watermarks, or all of the above to ensure ballots are not simply pre-printed in China and then used in our elections here in the US for a vote for the Chinese favorite in any given election.

"Mail-in voting should be banned right from the start. It should never be done as a convenience."

Absolutely right. That is what makes the fraud and cheating possible.
1. Amateurs do the signature checking
2. Post COVID, the number of mail ballots soared (only because of irrational fear of the virus transmission pushed by Dems)
3. Post COVID, the number of rejected ballots collapsed.

In 2016, 33.5 million mail ballots were returned nationwide. Of these, 335,000 were rejected (1.0%). The most common reasons included non-matching signatures (around 33% of rejections) and missing deadlines.

In the 2018 midterm, 27.4 million mail ballots returned Of these, 383,000 ballots were rejected (1.4% rejection rate). Midterms often see slightly elevated rejection rates, possibly due to less voter education focus than in presidential years. "Other" reasons (e.g., missing documentation) topped the list at 35%, followed by late arrivals.

In the COVID 2020 election, 70.6 million mail ballots were returned and 558,000 rejected. The rejection rate dropped to 0.8%! The lower rate is notable given the influx of first-time mail voters. Several factors contributed: many states expanded curing processes (e.g., 15 states plus D.C. added this in 2020), extended deadlines (e.g., accepting ballots postmarked by Election Day), and improved voter outreach. For instance, Florida’s rejection rate fell from 1.3% in 2018 to under 0.3% in 2020, with nearly 73% of flagged ballots "cured."

The reduced rejection rate and increase in "curing" is outrageous. That can only happen if the states were more lax about checking ballots. More mail-in ballots but far less rejection? Sell me that bridge in NYC.

Here in NC, that barcode links my Request For Ballot to the actual ballot that I fill out. Anyone can tell exactly how I voted.

Ballots in the Soviet Union were probably similar which in part is why leadership were elected with 95 percent of the votes.

They never quite got 100 percent to allow for meeting steady demand for labor in Siberia.

Your cell phone will decode and display all QR codes.

Is that an app, and/or does it have to be a fairly new phone? Because mine doesn't.

In my election center, they take a ballot from the top of the stack, and without scanning it, give it to me. There’s no way to match that particular ballot to me. The bar code is just to notify the machine that it’s a real ballot.

Just as easy to identify who the vote belongs to and throw
out the ‘undesirables’ - anonymous ballots better imho.

As long as you have to show valid ID and vote in person as much as possible.

Mine will do it whenever I activate the camera and point it at the QR code. I have an iPhone 14+, but I think older ones will do it. What do you have?

Mine’s a 7. I just Googled it, and I guess it does. I just never knew how to do it (nor particularly wanted to.) But hey... good to know! Thanks! =)

This loon doesn’t get that voters can write on a paper ballot and have it read by human beings, not by a digital system that can be hacked—which so many were in the past two elections, particularly 2020. Ditching the digital coding is one way to discourage machine-aided vote switching.

It is impossible to have both rigid ballot security and absolutely secret ballots/votes at the same time.

Bar Codes contain and control information.
Is it possible for a bar code to contain enough information to vote the ballot prearranged ?
