Colleges rely on federal research funding. Under Trump, its future is in doubt
The Associated Press ^ | March 28, 2025 | BY SHARON LURYE AND JOCELYN GECKER

After decades of partnership with the U.S. government, colleges are facing new doubts about the future of their federal funding.

President Donald Trump’s administration has been using the funding spigot to seek compliance with his agenda, cutting off money to schools including Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. All the while, universities across the country are navigating cuts to grants for research institutions.

The squeeze on higher education underscores how much American colleges depend on the federal government — a provider of grants and contracts that have amounted to close to half the total revenue of some research universities, according to an Associated Press analysis.

It adds up to a crisis for universities, and a problem for the country as a whole, say school administrators and advocates for academic freedom. America’s scientific and medical research capabilities are tightly entwined with its universities as part of a compact that started after World War II to develop national expertise and knowledge.

“It feels like any day, any university could step out of line in some way and then have all of their funding pulled,” said Jonathan Friedman, managing director of free expression programs at PEN America.

The AP analysis looked at federal funding for nearly 100 colleges currently under investigation for programs the administration has deemed as illegally pushing diversity, equity and inclusion, or for not doing enough to combat antisemitism. Those schools took in over $33 billion in federal revenue in the 2022-2023 academic year. That’s before taking into account federal student aid, which represents billions more in tuition and room-and-board payments.

Thank goodness they have over a trillion bucks in endowments then, eh?

I’m sure their donors will work with them on that.

Researching how to brainwash a society into communism? Federal money should not be going to colleges and private organizations. Leave that to the states.

As Eric Weinstein has observed, much, if not most, of contemporary scientific research appears compromised by Leftist ideology. Rather than pursuing objective truth, funding is directed toward studies designed to validate predetermined conclusions.

Some government-funded research is worth while, but much of it is worthless. Some examples of our tax money hard at work at kollege kampuses:

I see the AP has multiple pearl clutching stories out this morning.

I’m sure Federal funding has contributed to some medical breakthroughs over the years. But the last thing these two AP ditz’s would ever do is spend time to quantify what we taxpayers have gotten for our money because we all know the answer.(including these two ditz’s)

Research funding, like the research into transsexual mice.

What would we do without these important studies. /spit

65% to 70% of each research grant is gobbled up by the Institution for ‘overhead’. The researcher is left with 30% of the grant to actually do research.

And? The problem is? Fact is all of public education must be dismantled in its current iteration and rebuilt by their respective communities. If said community can’t afford to rebuild the college; if said college cannot support itself on the basis of tuition, alone; then the community doesn’t need the college in the first place.

DOGE said last night that the researchers only get 60% of the money and the administration gets 40%. It should be 85% to research and 15% for administration. That’s why they are screaming.

Cut the gravy train off. I’m tired of the taxpayers funding studies to figure out why lesbians tend to be fat while homosexuals are usually skinny, or looking into the sex lives of insects. Let colleges make it on their own without taxpayer money and maybe they’ll start getting back to their core functions.

Colleges have tons of money. Billions.

They can reallocate money to research.

They just don’t want to.

If they allow terrorists to damage buildings, take over campuses so students can’t attend classes, and attacks on Jewish students to go unpunished, they should lose funding.
Administrators that allowed this should be fired, and professors who participated should also be fired.

I know someone who got research money at one of the elite colleges....the study....in my eyes....was a total waste. It was more about manipulation than truth.

Kinda like the Climate warming cr**.
