Dems Claim Florida Special Election 'a Lot Closer Than People Expected.' Good Luck With That.

There's a special House election coming up on April 1 to fill the seat left vacant when Rep. Mike Waltz resigned from Congress to serve as national security advisor to Donald Trump. Democrats are pulling out all the stops, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle and steal a seat in a district that gave Donald Trump a 30-point margin of victory.

Trump's handpicked successor to Waltz is Republican State Sen. Randy Fine (R-19th District). His opponent is math teacher Josh Weil. Weil has reportedly raised $10 million for the race, with the state Democrats vowing to raise another $5 million by election day.

Fine has raised just $1 million, which has annoyed several Republicans in the state, including Governor Ron DeSantis, who clashed with Fine during the 2024 campaign when the state senator flipped his endorsement from DeSantis to Trump.

“We are annoyed but not worried,” added one national GOP strategist. The national politico spoke on the condition he wouldn't be identified. “Annoyed Fine hasn’t done jack s**t for himself and is counting on the ecosystem to bail him out," he added.

That "ecosystem" has nurtured several high-powered GOP candidates, including DeSantis, who got his start running for Congress in the same district.

...

Special elections anywhere in the country have notoriously feeble turnout,

...

the vast majority of Weil's money is coming from out of state.

Dems get the teachers union to turnout for these special elections. I hope Republicans don’t get complacent.

This needs to stop. We don't allow foreign interference in elections. Money coming from another State is foreign.

Hmmm, being annoyed but not worried is not a winning strategy.

Another mediocre GOP candidate, another case where the Democrats have all the money in the world and all the motivation.

Despite the above this race should NOT even be close, but those few who were paying attention to a much less important special election (PA state Senate) which was held earlier this week know that what SHOULD happen doesn’t always actually happen when the GOP doesn’t get out the vote.

Go around losing elections like this one in Florida (and add in the other lower-level special elections which have already been lost recently) and the predictions of “BLOO WAYVE!!!!” for 2026 are going to get louder — and probably more accurate.

Republicans underachieved all over the place in special elections in 2023-24. Fortunately that turned out not to be a harbinger for what would happen in November, 2024.

You can’t count on that same pattern holding up forever. Hatred + money (Democrats) will beat complacency + relative poverty (Republicans) way more often than not, whether in April or in November.

Bob Packwood got far more funding from New York than from Oregon, at least in years where it mattered.

May Wayne Morse rest in peace.

Do not be surprised to see both seats to go Democrat.

Underestimate the trickery of Democrats at elections at your own peril.

Agree. This could be a flip due to indifferent electorate, complacent R candidate and heavily financed rat opponent. Wake up, GOP.

CD-6, we’re being told, could be a tossup when it shouldn’t be remotely close (R+14 district).

Even with conditions overall being what they are, the Democrat winning in Matt Gaetz’ old district (R+21) is beyond unimaginable.

Only reason the Dems won in Pa. is because the Republican voters were lazy. I just hope people pay attention and vote .

The article is from a NeverTrumper.

Never ever ever ever forget the GOPe wants Trump erased and when he’s gone they want the Swamp returned to power.

That’s why DeSantis is not in these districts. The Swamp WANTS Trump to fail.

Good thing this election isn’t in California. Votes would be “counted” until the Democrat wins, often weeks after election day - gives enough time for Democrat votes to be harvested, found stuck in the back of a machine or “forgotten” in the back of car.

I think that anger at Judicial Tyrany may work to our advantage in Wisconsin. Good early vote numbers coming out of GOP counties.

His opponent is math teacher Josh Weil.

And this guy Weil makes Ilhan Omar and Jasmine Crockett look like moderates! C'mon Florida!
