Russia, Ukraine Agree to Black Sea Ceasefire in Major Breakthrough at Saudi Talks

A series of talks involving U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials entered their third day on Tuesday in Riyadh, as negotiators continue to work on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. The discussions, aimed at halting the ongoing conflict, are focused on issues including safe shipping in the Black Sea and the potential for a limited ceasefire agreement.

What to Know:

* U.S. and Ukrainian talks resumed Tuesday, building on discussions that began Sunday regarding a possible 30-day ceasefire.

* A Kremlin official said that the outcome of U.S.-Russia talks might lead to further discussions, though no concrete agreements have been reached.

* While Moscow and Kyiv have struggled to agree on the terms of a ceasefire, both sides appear open to securing safe shipping in the Black Sea, a key commercial route.

* Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed discussions around the potential resumption of the 2022 Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allowed Ukraine to export grain through the region.

* Cross-border attacks continue, with Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy facilities and Russian missile strikes causing casualties in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that ceasefires covering the Black Sea and energy infrastructure were effective immediately. He warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin violates the agreements, Ukraine will seek additional sanctions and weapons from the United States.

"If the Russians violate this, then I have a direct question for President Trump. If they violate, here is the evidence — we ask for sanctions, we ask for weapons," Zelensky said.

Downing Street said the UK will continue to work closely with the US on defense and security following criticism from the US defense secretary accusing Europe of "freeloading."

One with no real navy and one which cannot get theirs into the Black Sea. Oh well it’s a start 🤔

This piecemeal crap is nuts. Just tell them both to stop.

Allowing the Russian Navy to sail where they want without guarantees seems a little dangerous.

Uh… you can ask. You can can also hope in one hand and —— in the other and see which one fills up first.

Making the Black Sea into neutral territory would be good for everyone. Plenty of fighting over the Kursk Bridge, Sebastopol and Valaklava, which disrupts fishing and shipping.

Understand, it’s just a very small 1st step. Going to be a long process which our enemies (Europe) can sabotage on each step….
