French officials have expressed their dismay after a French scientist was denied entry into the United States because immigration officers found text messages containing a "personal opinion" about the Trump administration and its policies on scientific research.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and sent to the AFP news agency, France's Minister of Higher Education and Research Philippe Baptiste said he had “learned with concern” that a space researcher working for the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) was stopped for a random check at an unspecified US airport and expelled due to critical text messages about US President Donald Trump.
According to an unnamed source cited by AFP, US authorities labelled the messages as “hatred towards Trump” that “could be qualified as terrorism”.
“Freedom of opinion, free research, and academic freedom are values that we will continue to proudly uphold, he said, adding: “I will defend the right of all French researchers to be faithful to them in accordance with the law.”
Since Trump took office in January, Baptiste has been vocal in his critique against the administration’s huge cuts in funding for the scientific community, leading to the dismissal of hundreds of federal workers working on health and climate change issues.
Last week, he also appeared on French news channel France Info, slamming the Trump administration’s cuts to critical sciences like health, climate change, renewable energy and AI.
“Research is being chain-sawed in the United States!” said Baptiste.
“This is not only a serious blow for American research, it’s a serious blow to global research in which the United States up until now has played a pivotal role.”

In this environment, I’d be okay with ending immigration as well as tourism and business travel into this country. Times of crisis call for extreme measures.
Slush funds being cut. That’s all this is about.
The only research being cut is “gain of function” research.
If things are so bad here, he should have stayed home.
I am sure there is a real reason this POS was denied entry which isn’t mentioned in this article.
“’Deplorable’: French scientist denied US entry over text messages criticising Trump”
I haven’t looked yet, but there is ALWAYS a Back Story - meaning more to the story than the Trump-hating media wants you to know (example, the female from the couple who lived illegally in the US for 30+ years before being deported recently, wound up being a top executive at Catholic Charities...something the media ‘conveniently’ forgot to mention).
I’ll look for this clown too...after all, why did Customs bother to even search his devices as that takes a long time and distracts from their main job of protecting us from drugs, illegals, and other contraband.
They are not telling us what he really said
Did they even name the ‘researcher’?
Bet you his name is Mohammed.
“Freedom of opinion, free research, and academic freedom are values that we will continue to proudly uphold, he said, adding: “I will defend the right of all French researchers to be faithful to them in accordance with the law.”
Fine.
They will have to do that in France, tho.
I move around the earth quite a bit... and all this censorship makes me very nervous. It didn’t start with the Americans, the Europeans began this crackdown on peoples social media posts. So much so, I’m much more careful with what I post, esp if I have to travel to these nations.
I’m quite appalled Trump is following suit.
Scientists have done as much harm as good, imho.
We’re in debt seven times our annual intake, Baptiste.
I mean, when you have people popping off at you anytime they want, when you have drones and planes overflying your HOME, when US Congress members and media openly talk about offing you...it's time to be cautious, at least!!
Why not wait until you know what was posted? I think Trump is doing a great job. People that advocate for violence & terrorism are not exercising free speech. There is no reason to allow such people the opportunity to hurt Americans.
Thank you for that information!
“They will have to do that in France, tho.

The French are worse than the Jesuits when it comes to stirring up trouble for the sake of trouble.
Thanks guys, I did manage to dig up the conference he was going to attend, but it’s next to impossible to do more without knowing the name of the guy - I guess we’re supposed to take the media’s word for it!
But let’s apply some logic here. Other than people arriving from, maybe, Russia, Hungary, and 5 year olds, 99% of all arrivals to the US who say anything on social media will have said something nasty about Trump. Hell, I’ve even been attacked here by saying something like “Trump needs to listen to Russian demands, otherwise his work on Ukraine peace won’t get very far”...so even I could get in trouble - LOL.
Anyway, my point is that it wasn’t a ‘random inspection’, but rather that Immigration has a list of nasty people, and he’s on that list. I have no idea why, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he also happens to call for the gassing of Jews or something like that, also.
Anyway, here’s the meeting...

There’s more to this story that they’re not telling, I’ll bet.
Go eat some cheese, Frenchy.
