Trump Effect: German Auto Giant Audi Looks to Move Production to U.S. to Avoid Tariffs

German luxury auto manufacturer Audi said it is considering moving car production to the United States to avoid tariffs from the Trump administration.

Volkswagen’s subsidiary Audi brand said this week that it is examining various long-term strategies, including potentially shifting production to America, to deal with President Donald Trump’s restrictions on foreign imports.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said that the company is “currently assessing various scenarios for additional localization in North America – among other things, to be closer to the needs of local customers and to make ourselves more resilient to global economic uncertainties.”

Very smart Audi is very popular in my area. It is the female mid life crisis purchase after the breast implants.

More proof protective tariffs work as an incentive for capital to flow into the country to build new manufacturing operations. It worked for the US from 1865 to 1900 when the US raised itself from the destruction of the Civil War to become the greatest industrial power on the planet. Those 35 years saw the highest tariffs in US history.

Tariffs and non trade barriers have also been used by China to protect domestic markets while building its industrial economy from 1990 to the present.

Without protective tariffs it will not be possible to rebuild the American manufacturing infrastructure lost over the past 30 years due to globalist free trade policies.

Wow! “Trump Effect” — no kidding.

“We have massive deficits with the EU… They don’t take our farm product, they don’t take our cars… How many Chevrolets or Fords do you see in the middle of Munich? The answer is none. The EU has abused the United States for years, and they can’t do that,” President Trump remarked last month.

Audi would probably spend tens of billions to build new factories here.

You must live in or near a city.

VW/Porsche/Audi never established enough dealerships despite being in this country for about 70 years.

They’re so hard to service/repair, which must be done quite often.

I’m so glad to NOT be driving one of their products anymore; anytime I would go out of town I worried about getting stranded and having no mechanic who could repair it.

It is an aspirational upwardly mobile car, for people who cannot afford Bentleys.

VW has extra capacity in its Chatanooga plant since they stopped making the Passat there.

I don’t understand why Europeans would buy crappy Fords or GMs when they have BMWs and Benzes. It is like asking why don’t they buy crappy American cheese when they have 900 superior varieties.

And, like all European machinery, incredibly expensive to repair. Auto repair shops that focus on European cars charge about 40% more for labor than shops that repair American cars. And parts are WAY more expensive.

Not surprising. VW had a long history of putting factories wherever the customers were. They were still making air-cooled Beetles in Mexico in the early 2000s.

Now that the U.S. is looking increasingly like a Third World country, it makes sense for them to put an assembly line here.

Audi/Volkswagen are locked into “Mitbestimmung” which means they will allow the UAW to organize whatever plants they build. Good luck with that. VW already has this.

Cars are basically a luxury item in Europe, and Europeans are used to taking their cars to the dealership for service, not to an independent garage or DIY. European cars reflect this. VWs are no exception; they build them assuming only the dealership will work on them.

Non-dealership mechanics call German cars "Hitler's revenge", BTW.

Disclaimer: I was a VW owner for 23 years, and did most of my own maintenance, incl. buying the specialized tools to do the jobs. Toyotas are much easier to work on, IMO.

I also hear Germany is making enemies of their own automotive industry. Trying to force them to make EV’s, that China can make far more cheaply, is making things impossible, compounded with lack of demand. All when they make some of the best ICE engines in the world.

I have colleagues in Germany telling me how insane it all is. It will destroy Germany.
