Are You a Classical Liberal?
American Thinker ^ | 07/20/2025 | D. Parker

The question arises because the facts behind the term "classical liberal" are usually a revelation. This is a vital consideration given the political realignment in the states and around the world, with many on the Left moving to the Right and becoming classically liberal or just liberal in the truest sense of the word.

If that sounds confusing, it’s been primarily caused by the usual leftist Orwellian distortions of reality with word meanings, where without rational justification they have laid claim to every positive-sounding political term to cover for the fact that their collectivist ideologies are grounded in falsehoods and force. Thus, it’s important to consider the question and the facts of classical liberalism.

KEYWORDS:
"Classical liberalism is the idea that individual freedom and limited government are the best way for humans to form a free society."

Great reminder of what true liberalism is and how far the Dems have strayed from any sense of normalcy with American values.

Tammy Bruce, Rubio’s press secretary at State Department always described herself as , “Classical Liberal”, on her radio show.

Due to the fact that we are at war with all things liberal; due to the fact that current vernacular identifies Germany's NAZI party as liberal; due to the fact that today's liberals are the same as yesterday's NAZIs; the conclusion is that we can't afford to ameliorate the discussion by looking at anything "liberal" as innocuous.

There's too much at stake. Democrat. Libertarian. Liberal. Communist. Fascist. Socialist. All are the exact same enemy of the Republic.

Are You a Classical Liberal?

Yes, combined with social conservatism.

I’m a constitutional conservative. That means I very much believe in the bill of rights. Some may say that is a social liberal with conservative financial base. IDK. Someone would need to explain it to me. I’m dumb.

All of this got out of whack since the progressives strong-arm took over the word “liberal” in 1932, and further confused since the progressives took over dictionaries.

In a sane world, we would all identify as liberals. We would tell them, no, you are not liberals you are progressives.

I wish this war would’ve begun years ago to take this word back. Just snagging this word back would solve so many issues.

Generically speaking the word conservatism was never all that great of a word, it just happened to be the one that was available when Buckley and Kirk and the rest were on a roll during their visible days.

I stopped years ago using the term “liberal” to refer to Democrats. Leftists, socialists, fascists, depending. Occasionally populist or progressive, though I hate “progressive”, it just feeds their conceit. Somehow “populist” has been taken over by the right, but I think incorrectly.

I like “classic liberal”, which is how I refer to myself, with the proviso “rooted in a judeochristian world view”… Which is what most American conservatism is. Euro conservatism is a bit different, though there is a lot of overlap. I think American conservatism is more explicitly Christian at its roots whereas the Euro variety is less so. I could be wrong.

https://kirkcenter.org/conservatism/ten-conservative-principles/

In essence, the conservative person is simply one who finds the permanent things more pleasing than Chaos and Old Night. (Yet conservatives know, with Burke, that healthy “change is the means of our preservation.”) A people’s historic continuity of experience, says the conservative, offers a guide to policy far better than the abstract designs of coffee-house philosophers. But of course there is more to the conservative persuasion than this general attitude.

It is not possible to draw up a neat catalogue of conservatives’ convictions; nevertheless, I offer you, summarily, ten general principles; it seems safe to say that most conservatives would subscribe to most of these maxims

Something then . . . Reading Road to Serfdom now, carefully. Hayek takes the mantle from Mill, Smith, de Tocqueville, Acton, and (wait for it).......Hilaire Belloc.

Just reading this morning what Belloc gives in The Servile State

As Elon recognizes the potential of AI becoming an "immortal dictator."

Elon Musk warns A.I. could create an ‘immortal dictator from which we can never escape’

But not to fear, the EU will regulate AI. They has their AI Act to avert a dystopian future:

They will ban AI systems that "cause harm."
They will ban AI systems that "exploit the vulnerable."
They will regulate AI for biometric ID.
Regulate all AI systems before market entry.
Exact fines for noncompliance.
Provide exemptions of any AI systems used for national security purposes.
Will align with international standards.
